How do I keep a cat out of my garage?

Asked by Fred931 (9434points) November 29th, 2011

So there’s been this cat that’s been in and out of our garage for about a week now. It isn’t a problem to me, really, but my dad has declared a holy war against it. At one point, it wound up inside the house, sleeping in a cabinet in the laundry room overnight. It apparently lingers somewhere near the house, because within the span of about 15 minutes of the garage door being open last morning, it sneaked back in and hid behind a toolchest before we chased it back out (Rather, my dad, who began jumping and banging the largest things he could find and yelling as loud as he could like a f***ing madman). I saw it on the porch coming back home from school today, and I chased it off. My dad found that between now and last morning, the cat had knocked over the crushed cans and left a present in the garage again; I suspect it was like that this morning, because the garage doors were closed all day, but of course my dad thought it teleported magically in.

So what do we need to do to keep it out? It has no collar so we assume it’s a stray.

If you can’t figure out how it got in there and block it, your only option would be to set up a trap and take it to the pound.
I hope someone here has a better idea.

Poor Kitty! Looking for a place to stay and food. Your just care about keeping it out?? Check to see if there’s a rescue group nearby on the internet so you can help the cat, not just keep it out on the street without food, a warm place, etc . Wish I lived near you to rescue it!

I agree with @comity

Obviously it is lost or a stray. Try to capture it and take it to the shelter.

I also agree. About the only way to keep it out without killing it is to relocate it. Either get a live trap from the humane society or animal control and try to catch it. Or get it in the garage, close the doors and coax it into a sturdy box with a lid.

Then take it to the local animal shelter.

@comity I was just neutral about it, and you make it sound like I hate it more than my dad! Hah.

We have a couple of humane centers around here. I’ll get my dad to call someone. Thanks.

@Fred931 That’s great! Didn’t mean to sound that way. Just felt bad for the kitty.

Sometimes shelters are in overload and not accepting more cats. See if they know of a local rescue group. Do some research on the internet to see if there are any rescue groups in your area. Check with the humane society to see if they know of a group. Try your best to save the kitty and maybe leave some cat food out for him/her The cat’s probably pretty hungry. Good luck in your attempts and let us know how it works out.

Sounds like some patch work oughta do the trick. Patch work everywhere around the house. Cats can slip into things unheard of!
It’s probably hunting mice. Meow!

Don’t know if you solved your cat problem but a few suggestions for the future..

Try to find a no kill shelter or humane society in your area. When it comes to your house again, your only option is to drive over there with the cat. And in order to this, you’ll have to set up a humane cat trap with an old cardboard box and an open can of wet cat food. Place the trap where the cat is coming in the most.

Or…if your neighbor has a dog, ask them to walk their dog in your yard and let it pee around your yard’s boundary lines. I heard cats don’t like the smell of an enemy’s urine.

Another option is to invest in motion sensing random pattern water sprinklers. The random pattern so the cat can’t determine which direction the water sprays.

@Fred931 So how are you doing in your campaign against the cat?

We’re all waiting to find out what happened with the cat? Look forward to your response.

Sorry I didn’t respond. The day after I posted this, we found out it was a opossum. Those things move so damn fast you’d think it was the cat that was in the garage two days before, but… Damn! We shooed it out somehow.

@Fred931 Haha..well, possums are good, they eat snails, and cat food. lol
Glad it worked out, there’s a bunch of cat lovers here sooo we like to see happy outcomes. :-)
