Do you think the Victoria Secret Fashion Show is the Super Bowl of fashion shows?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) November 30th, 2011

Just some thoughts to play with, do you believe the Victoria Secret Fashion Show is like the Super Bowl of fashion shows, seeing no other fashion shows have super star entertainment. Do you know of another fashion show that is seen as bigger, like Dior, Armani, Wang, etc? If it is not advertized how can companies run commercials on it?

In addition, would the Victoria Secret Fashion Show be as huge (no pun intended) if it was loaded with size 12 and up models jiggling down the runway?

When did Victoria Secret broom Fredrick’s of Hollywood out of the way as the go to place for exotic lingerie?

Hardly. The top designers’ runway shows at Fashion Week are the Super Bowl of fashion shows.

It is merely a paid advertisementn on prime time.
“But wait! There’s more! These wings are sharp enough to slice a shoe.”

Nope. I think it is a good marketing ploy, though. And of course it wouldn’t be as popular if they had elephants wobbling down the runway. Although the models are like elephants compared to normal fashion models, who look like boys. VS needs models with breasts and hips in order to get the guys dicks up and credit cards in hand, ordering unwearable clothing they hope will make their wives and gfs look like the models on the runway.

Not hardly, at least because there is not a competition to get there.
It’s more like the opening of a shiny new store, all flashy and self-congratulatory.

Some bigger women are very fit, just bigger, and gorgeous, and I’d welcome including them in, um, er, collections like VS runway show. Most hetero men appreciate healthy women in all sizes. And I think plenty of VS customers of both genders would appreciate it too, but I doubt VS will ever do anything like that.

VS products aren’t very exotic either, they’re mostly just skimpy.
Compared to some of the stuff Frederick’s have VS are tame. Have Frederick’s been broomed out of the way? They were never quite mainstream in the first place.

Good question, though, and it’s been a pleasure considering it from every angle.

No. I don’t watch it just for the commercials.

@wundayatta VS needs models with breasts and hips in order to get the guys dicks up and credit cards in hand, ordering unwearable clothing they hope will make their wives and gfs look like the models on the runway. Wouldn’t, or shouldn’t that be the goal of any other fashion designer, be it American Apparel, Gap, Levi, Tommy Hilfiger, etc. If they have any apparel for women they want the women to look hot wearing them, either so they will buy it to appeal to men, or men will buy it to make their women look hot? –Though I have to say, American Apparel don’t have ”boyish” models.

@dabbler Compared to some of the stuff Frederick’s have VS are tame. Have Frederick’s been broomed out of the way? They were never quite mainstream in the first place. Of course, Fredrick was no nonsense, it was all about the bed and sex. VS to me seem branded more for exotic titillation, more for people who were not married, where Fredrick was all about married couples that wanted to get their freak on. Then when all of that had faded, you went to the Hanes, Playtex, and other stuff. I cannot say VS was mainstream from the start, but somehow made it that way.

I won’t get into the ”healthy size”, I will just defer to what size I see in Ms Universe, etc.

Many women would die to be in the Victoria Secret fashion shows. It takes hard work to get there. Lots of yoga and dieting, which is not for everybody.

And there are women who don’t want to put that kind of effort forth to look like those models, or envious of how they look, that would like to see the VSFS die before they do. I cannot think of any fashion event less Fashion Week that has as much media buzz.

I agree.Society just needs to focus on the ‘real’ women of the world. There are way more women that have ‘unperfect’ bodies than there are ‘waifs’. And that skininess doesn’t always come naturally. Women starve themselves and some are just too extreme.
