Is a car registration proof of ownership?

Asked by Sponge (541points) December 6th, 2011 from iPhone

When I bought my car ( my first btw) 6 years ago they gave me one but I lost it. How can I get another one and how much will it cost?

No, it is not. You need to go to your state Division of Motor Vehicle and get a duplicate title for proof of ownership. It’s not a big deal but I don’t know how much they charge for one in your state.

It is an easy process. Some states, e.g. Florida, allow you to do it online. It takes about 6 weeks to get a replacement title. You will need a title if you intend to get rid of the car – even to junk it.
