When you finally get to the point where you are ready to listen or tolerate holiday music, which songs (of both traditional and contemporary types) do you enjoy hearing?

Asked by jca (36062points) December 7th, 2011

It’s not usually until around early or mid December that I am ready and willing to tolerate holiday music. I find a song here and there puts me in the holiday mood, but I can’t take much more.

Some songs that I like, when I do listen to a holiday song, are the Mariah Carey one, the Beach Boys one and some Motown ones. I also like the Live Aid one. In the traditional category, I like The Little Drummer Boy and the one something about Christmas in Central Park (the one with the sleigh bells).

What holiday songs do you like or tolerate when you are finally ready and willing to listen to some holiday music?

I lean towards classical ones. There are plenty of good recent ones, but there are more newer ones I detest.

Let Me Put My Love Into You, AC/DC.
Sorry, I hate christmas music.

@Adirondackwannabe: I LOVE LOVE LOVE that song! Of all the AC/DC songs, that’s my favorite one! I am not really a huge holiday music fan, but as I said, it puts me in the holiday mood (and, unfortunately, the shopping mood!).

Carol of the Bells is so great… it’s the angriest Christmas song.

I have a weakness for Kate Bush’s December Will be Magic Again. There’s a delightful silliness about it.

I love haunting Christmas songs like Spaceman Came Travelling. I also love Fairytale of New York. I really enjoy listening to choirs sing traditional Christmas music rather than pop singers etc.

I’m ready now to start hearing the Christmas music. I am not very fond of the snowmen and Santa songs, but probably there are a few exceptions.

I love Carol of the Bells
Pat a Pan
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Joy to the World
Do they know it’s Christmas

And, the Nutcracker.

I can tolerate holiday music if it’s classical and not jazzified instrumental, no particular songs.

@downtide I love I Believe in Father Christmas! Great song… also Jackson Browne’s The Rebel Jesus.

I ususally listen to my itunes on shuffle so I enjoy selections from Rankin/Bass’ Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer year round. It’s a pretty sweet soundtrack.

Rock it Burl Ives!

Some classics (“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”) along with a few indie songs (“All That I Want” by The Weepies).
