Does the fact that your employer essentially buys your time bum you out?

Asked by prioritymail (1630points) December 10th, 2011

There is never enough time to do everything we want to do. When you work for someone else – and it does seem like there is no getting around this – they are essentially buying a part of your life. Does knowing this bum you out? Do you get paid what you think your time is worth? In terms of maximizing free time, what’s the better strategy – make a lot of money doing a job you dislike so that you can afford to make time for yourself later, or make little money doing a job you love and having to do it longer?

I get paid by the hour. What’s the difference. It’s all about time.

No. I actually like my job so it isn’t a hardship to do it (I wouldn’t mind less of it to do though). Also, if they didn’t pay me (and I would be happy with more money for what I do), I wouldn’t be able to pay my bills or do any of the things I love to do that cost money.

I would probably go with the latter option because I would get resentful and miserable if I was doing a job I didn’t like. I have seen research that shows if someone isn’t happy in their job, receiving more money won’t improve that feeling in the long term.

I do something I like doing, and happen to make money at it. It keeps me from getting bored like I would sitting on my ass at home too. So no, it doesn’t bum me out.

Trial & error.
Make little money doing a job you love in your own dedicated time but keep making a lot of money doing a job you dislike until you perfect your plan of making Enough money in your own job you love.
And never be afraid of risk or failure in your quest.

huh? I think right now anybody would be grateful to have anybody buy their time. Like just having a job at all, see?

No. I need money to survive so I know that I have to work for it. I enjoy my jobs (I have 3) so it’s not a major bummer. I often wish I had more free time but I just try to appreciate it when I do get it!

Umm no – that’s what earning a living is all about.

I don’t think of it like that. I think of it as receving pay for service rendered.

My ex husband and I undertook our own business just after marrying and for near a decade, we worked more than we ever imagined. We worked everyday and sometimes slept overnight at our studio.

Be careful what you ask for unless you have thoroughly researched what it takes to “do what you love”. We loved what we did, our identities were in it as well as our talents but it rough going.

Nope it doesn’t “Bum me out” it’s just that I have to work to pay the bills, the money also comes in handy for spoiling my family & close friends, especially now at Christmas time….. I prefer to work the weekends because my employer pays me one & a half, plus twice as much as my normal rate through the week… when I do have my “free time” there’s usually a little left over so that I can make the most of it; getting out & enjoying myself….. :-/
Oh yeah!! I enjoy my job too ;-)
