My computer sometimes makes a sound, even when I set it to mute?

Asked by manuel_alarcon (299points) December 16th, 2011

Hi, I modifyed the sound settings on my Windows XP to no sounds at all,... but sometimes, I hear the “Windows XP start” sound like 3 or 4 times in a row, even when the computer is doing nothing, and nothing is open… I don’t know where this may come from, maybe a software does it, or a setting…. what could it be?

That sounds like a problem for sure. I would doubt it is a setting. And I don’t think it would matter if it was muted or not. I’ve never heard the “start” sound four times in a row or when it was not opening. Was it doing that before you played with the settings? did you try resetting the defaults?

no, I always set the sounds to a silent profile
