Did the Shock and Awe propaganda help or hurt the US in the eyes of the world?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) December 17th, 2011

In the buildup to the Iraq invasion, the Bush Administration bombastically boasted of a “Shock and Awe” assault the likes of which the world had never before witnessed. Cheney and Wolfowitz assured us the war would only take a month or two, that it would require only a light force, and that it would pay for itself.

After all the Shock and Awe was done, what actually happened was the war lasted 8 years and cost us 4.500 US lives, hundreds of thousands wounded, many with their lives devastated by the severity of their wounds, and $1 trillion now and counting. Estimates are the long range cost will run over $3 trillion with care and benefits for the Veterans and the large contractor footprint still there for training of the Iraqi army. Let’s be clear. This is how well Shock and Awe worked to subdue a third world country with a population about 1/10th that of the USA. So if we now face a first-world power like Russia, how effective will the threat of Shock and Awe be to them? Was all the bombast, boasting and chest beating a good idea, or a bad one?

Don’t be silly. Everybody knows the “eyes of the world” are closed.

Most people who had been paying attention knew it was a stinking crock of shit of the Orwellian variety.

The “Shock & Awe” invasion (& propaganda) definitely hurt the standing of the US in the eyes of the world & all of the other stuff that went on in Iraq perpetrated by the US. Bush & Cheney were definitely war mongers (& very possibly involved in the subtrafuge that happened on 9/11 – too many inconsistancies in the actions taken & too many questions about how the buildings came down). The result of trying something like this on a truly industrialized country would NOT succeed.

@Dutchess_III I totally agree.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies I’m not being silly and unless you are “everyone” you are wrong. You may have intended your post as sarcasm, but without the tildes, I must assume you are serious and thus seriously wrong.

@Mamradpivo Thanks.

@cazzie I certainly did. It was glaringly obvious that Bush and his crew of neo-con incompetents were broadcasting BS for their own nefarious purposes, which ended up as miserable failures. The sad thing is no one has ever been held accountable for launching an unnecessary and illegal war of aggression that was based on deliberate lies, cost us som much in blood, treasure and world standing, and has substantially weakened our interestsd in the region.

@Linda_Owl If there is any truth to the 9/11 conspiracy theory, my most fervent hope is that the truth comes out and those responsible pay the ultimate price for their crimes. Given George Bush’s personality, it’s not that hard to accept.
