WIll you define art by example?

Asked by 6rant6 (13700points) December 31st, 2011

I’ve got a list here of five things. They are ordered to exemplify my definition of art.

If you want to play, take any FOUR of the items from the list posted before you, add one of your own, and put them in the order YOU think they should be in, according to how well they exemplify YOUR definition of art.

1. ‘Mujer’, a Cubist painting by Juan Carlos Ñañake
2. MacBeth by Will.I.Am Shakespeare
3. Occupy Wall Street
4. This Ansel Adams Photo
5. This stock photo of a smiling child

There’s no requirement to explain your ordering. But hey, it’s Fluther, so who’s to stop you?

1. Kinkaid Because it captures a feeling. It speaks of rainy days, city life, and the bustle of human activity. It glows with a life that lingers behind the busy and unaware pedestrians who hunker and walk with their heads down. To me it portrays the glow we could all see were we to just look up and find it.

2. Mujer Because of the “perspective”. It is interesting to me that the artist portrays a woman’s face (something generally seen as a smooth, beautiful countenance) and turns it into shards of perspective that leave you wondering why.

3. Ansel Adams Photo I like mountains.

4. Stock Photo of a random kid There’s nothing to say about this photo. Cute kid. Boring picture.

5. Occupy Wall Street. ??

Sidebar: I included Wall Street as art because it fits two of my criteria nicely. It was intended to change the way we look at something, and it did. I’m thinking I’m going to add to definition that art uses one thing to change the way we think about something else. Which would also fit the Occupy movement.

@6rant6 Could you tell me what “Occupy Wall Street” even means?

Occupy Wallstreet is a protest movement.
