What's a good way to get rid of loose stool caused by lots of highly potent antibiotics?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37339points) January 1st, 2012

I’ve been hospitalized most of the past 2 weeks and have taken some very heavy duty antibiotics. As a result, I’m having loose stool. It’s not diarrhea yet, and I don’t want it to get that far.

I’m eating yogurt with live cultures.

What else can I do?

Keep up with probiotics. Also, a small amount of fiber will help your stool bulk.

I like GoodBelly probiotic juice and a tablespoon of chia seeds stirred in, once a day.

Are you allowed to use pepto bismol? That firms things up too. But the probiotics will help best in the long term.

This is off-Topic but feel better soon, Hawaii Jake! Can I read you some Eliot?

Hope you get to go home soon. Two weeks in hospital will screw up anyone’s GI tract.

No helpful advice from any of the Drs., Nurses, Nurse’s aids, orderlies, foodies, or housecleaning staff who are on hand?

Two weeks? What happened? A severe infection?

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

Yes, a severe infection. I got plenty of helpful hints, but just wondering what jellies think, too.

Two weeks on IV antibiotics? You are lucky to be able to even stagger to the bathroom. The antibiotics don’t discriminate between the good, the bad and the ugly bacteria. They are equal-opportunity terminators.

When do you get to go home?

My grandmother used dry toast, cottage cheese, homemade broth, baked potatoes and jello as her cures.

Cheese, yogurt and the probiotics should do it! : ))

Thanks, gailcalled. I’m home now.

I suggest getting some probiotics at a supplement store and taking those. They really helped me after an ear infection put me on antibiotics for a month!

Jake, glad you are home. Try cheese.

Yes, the probiotics are very important. I use them on my animals as well. Just finished with my new cat who was medicated for an intestinal parasite that caused loose stools.
It is best to combine the probiotics during treatment. Antibiotic at one time, then followed with a hit of probiotics some hours later between doses.

Most yogurts don’t have enough lactobicilli to prevent diarrhea from very strong antibiotics, but it can help. The capsules you can buy should help, look at how many millions in each pill when comparing.

Probiotic capsules! They should contain in the billions ballpark. Glad you’re home.

This just recently happened to me. Probiotic capsules did the trick. You can get some at any drugstore. Next time you have to take antibiotics start taking probiotics at the same time.

I just noticed this question, Jakie, I am so sorry to hear you have not been well. I truly hope you are feeling better by now.

I agree with the yogurt, and buttermilk if you can stomach it. I trust you are not lactose intolerant, that makes a lot of the natural cures a bit difficult. I guess the BRAT diet wouldn’t hurt either, bananas, rice, apples (peeled) and toast.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.
