I need to transpose guitar tabs to piano music?

Asked by shar12392 (4points) January 2nd, 2012

I make my own music for church and recently came across music that was only in guitar tabs. I need to transpose the tabs to piano music.

I’ve never written out a translation from tabliture to sheet music, but I’ve played tabbed music on the piano. I just play the melody in the right hand and play an arpeggio of the chord in the left hand. I guess you could write that out.

I don’t think you can directly transpose from tabs to sheet music because tabs are just chords. you CAN just turn the chords into sheet music, but you’d have to repeat where you wanted the chords to “strum”. The music would only be chords and they’d be a bit blocky.

You have to get slightly creative when you play tab on the piano, because as far as I can tell, it’s not a clean direct translation.

Guitar and piano are both concert instruments. That means a C on the piano is a C on a guitar and vise versa. 1 to 1 translation.

The problem with guitar tabs is that there is no timing or note duration infomation in them. You will have to add that in.

Note that a 88 key piano has a wider range of notes than guitar and piano players generally play different notes in their chords than guitar players.

I hope that helps.

use the chords and write out the melodies.
