How do (American) football players handle cold weather?

American football is played regardless of the weather. I’ve been in weather so cold that drawing a breath hurts in your chest. Exercising makes you breathe hard. When you exercise, you sweat. When you stop and it’s extremely cold, how do you handle the chill factor? What kind of gear or coping mechanisms do the players have under severe cold playing conditions?
