Is it healthy to do exercise for a few days then stop the next day then go again?

Asked by BBawlight (2437points) January 12th, 2012

My 7th grade gym teacher has us do our exercises each day.
10 jumping jacks
10 steel jacks
10 prison squats
10 scissors
10 forward and backward arm circles
10 twists
10 ankle hops
15 lunges
15 side lunges
15 knee-ups
15 Frankenstein (kick up and touch your toe with the opposite hand)

We did this everyday until winter break (2 weeks). Then we came back and did it for the rest of the week (Our legs were sore) then stopped today. We won’t do them tomorrow either. But Monday we will.
Is this on-off thing okay for my body?

Sure. You are young and your body will adapt to this program. Sure, you are going to be sore, but that’s telling you that you may be out of shape.

Carry on.

It’s better than not doing any exercise. Your body can use the non exercise days to repair itself.

Recovery time is important, but you can still do some work on your own on the off days if you don’t want to lose your momentum.

A daily routine of aerobic exercises like that is an excellent idea. You’d do well to continue them on weekends. If you start lifting deadweights or using gym machines designed to emulate pumping iron, you do not want to do thise exercises daily,. You should do exercises like that, designed to build mussle mass instead of endurance, every other day. Strength exercises actually break down muscle cells, which then repair and increse in number. The muscles need a day if rest to be ready fir the next li=fting episode. But you can still do your aerobic fitness exercises—designed to increase stamina—on a daily basis right along with your schedule of muscle mass exercises done on every other day.

The more you do the less it will hurt and you will start to find it easier. I have a 45 minute gym programme that I do at least twice a week and the first time I did it I was in agony for dys after. Getting out of bed was a mission and I couldn’t straighten my arms out for at least three days. However, whilst I am still sore at times, the sessions are getting easier and I’m not unable to do normal day to day tasks now because of the pain. I want to start increasing the amount of time I train even if it’s just an extra session a week on the cross trainer or similar. I think it’s great that you are getting so much excercise at such a young age. If you get used to excercising whilst at school hopefully you will be willing to continue (join a gym or go for a regular run) after you leave.
