How can I synchronize everything with one solution?

Asked by metadog (378points) January 15th, 2012

Hi! My boss has like 5 computers, iPads, iPhones, etc. Lots of devices. He wants “everything everywhere at all times.” Photos, documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), music, etc. I don’t think iCloud can do it all in an automated way that solves all of the issues, though it does seem that this is an opportunity for a “cloud solution.” Also, he isn’t very organized, so an application that forces him to be more orderly would be good. I am not really looking for a free solution here, I am looking for what works. Does such a beast exist?

No. Ok first off the 5 computers can all hook up to the same server as well as the iPad. You can have one of the computers on at all times and set the other computers up as monitors only where you can still control them. But there are apps that don’t work on iPhone and iPad that work only on computers.

I would suggest Dropbox. The free version is only a few gigs, but if price isn’t an object they offer (pricy) expanded versions that can get really large. It will sync everything in the specified folder on each machine (and if you pull some tricks, you can expand that to any folder you want) to all other machines synced to it. Good luck!

Another vote for Dropbox.

For work we use an Android phone, two Windows machines, a Mac and an iPad., Everything saved on any one of the five is available on the others within minutes.

And the phone and iPad clients are smart enough to only download files we open (but you can see the entire list of available files.
