Can you recommend a reliable, safe crib mattress? (firsthand knowledge only please)

Asked by pkuttner (150points) January 15th, 2012

I am driving myself crazy looking for a crib mattress for my soon to be born child. Can you recommend something that won’t sag in the middle after only a few months of use? I would like a mattress that is really firm. Please do not respond with a bunch of internet research (I have already done plenty). I would like to know what worked for your baby. If you can link to the item that would be great. Thank you!

Baby mattresses don’t sag. Most are firm in the first place and a baby is never in it long enough to do any damage. Unless you are going to have an extremely heavy 30 lb kid, it won’t barely cause an indent in the mattress as it lays. Its been years but both of my kids used the same mattess. My son for 1 year and my daughter for 18 months. It was still in fine condition when I sold it. It wasn’t anything expensive or super fancy. I use to work in a daycare center for 2 years. None of the mattresses where ever changed while I was there and we would occasionally have a really heavy baby. Even our heavy babies didn’t damage the mattresses. The only time people change them is if it has some protective covering that has been damaged. I’ve never seen a sagging baby mattress.
Babies don’t care either. They can sleep anywhere. Just make sure its firm and not made of hazzardous matterials.
Congrats on your little one.

I agree with Pandora. Babies don’t weigh enough to sag a mattress. They also don’t weigh enough to suffer if the mattress isn’t totally firm. If you want to get picky about something, go for hypoallergenic.

@pkuttner Ours has lasted about a decade (so far) with various nieces/nephews and babysitting babies sleeping on it prior to my son sleeping on it…Ours still looks brand new. The one we chose has an infant side & a toddler side. Ours had a staph guard and is extremely washable.

All I’d consider is washability. These mattresses are made extra firm/sturdy and hold up even to the jumpiest toddler.

Go check them out at your local baby store (our is a USA Baby brand).

We’re now using the mattress as an animal bed…It still looks brand new.
