Does $25-30 a month for a gas bill in the city of LA seem like too much?

Asked by Emilyy (2133points) May 20th, 2008

Someone told me that this seems high. We split bills and my roommate pays gas. The bills are for $24 -30 on a normal month to a whopping $80 when we used heat. We have an old heater with only one setting—high—which I think accounts for that. I’m moving out soon so I don’t care about the future, but I’m wondering if I should talk to the gas company to see if we’ve been hooked up to someone else’s unit, or if this is comparable to what others are paying…

Any advice would help.

It wouldn’t hurt to talk to them. They should be able to provide a comparison of the consumption month by month this year to the previous year. Then you can see if the usage was typical or had a sudden spike.

I live in Los Angeles and my bills are comparable to yours. For your comparison purposes, I have a small two bedroom, one bathroom house and use gas for cooking, heating and hot water for washing dishes and showers/baths (there are two of us although we occasionally share the shower/bath).

I’m looking at my gas bill, and it’s right in that range. Maybe a little more. Totally normal.
