What are the origins of your fluther name?

Asked by smilingheart1 (6439points) January 27th, 2012

Just going over a recent meta “welcome party” thread and this time I find myself in ever increasing wonderment about how many of you came up with your fluther name.

Would anyone care to share the origins of the name we know you by or if you would rather not, then how about make up a little fantasy origin story. It’s Friday, c’mon!

I just picked mine without any plan or anything.

WestRiverrat's avatar

My friends and I spend so much time on the river in the summer, and a couple of us in the winter icefishing, that we got nicknamed river rats. Since I am the only one that lives on the west bank I am the West River rat.

HungryGuy's avatar

I chose Hungry Guy as my pseudonym a few years ago when I started writing erotic horror stories. I used it on several story publishing sites, and it has become my online persona on other sites as well.

harple's avatar

I chose harple because I play the harp, and harple sounded cute, like a little harp playing jellyfish or something…. (People often think I’m called harpie, with an i, but that’s something quite different!)

PhiNotPi's avatar

No planning, but I wanted something that I wouldn’t ever have reason to regret making into my name, and sort of made me look more professional than any ordinary random name. I like my name being able to be pronounced. I also do not like numbers at the end of the name. @PhiNotPi fit all of these criteria to an acceptable degree.

MilkyWay's avatar

I changed my username so I had a good think over it.
As most people know here, I am a milk freak. I love love love milk. And, I’m a chocaholic, and MilkyWay is the name of a chocolate bar.
I also consider myself as having an open mind, so I thought MilkyWay suited me best.

Judi's avatar

I was not very creative at all.

Skylight's avatar

My real name is Aurora. Skylight is another way of saying Aurora (Borealis) and is not quite as common as I have found Aurora to be when I try to use it on a community website. I have been away for a year, but was coaxed back by a great person I know from another site. Glad I’m back. Thanks Hain_roo!

chyna's avatar

I don’t remember and that drives me crazy!

It has nothing to do with your multiple visits to China, @chyna?

Sunny2's avatar

It’s the name of a collie I used to have. Still haven’t forgotten her.

stardust's avatar

It’s an oldie and I’m lazy.

AshLeigh's avatar

My name is Ash-Leigh, but Fluther wouldn’t let me use a hyphen in my username.
I’m so creative.

DrBill's avatar

My name is Bill, and I’m a doctor.

Mariah's avatar

I feel like a weirdo for having a first name that isn’t my real first name as my username. Basically, I really liked the name Mariah when I was 13 and I discovered AiROW.com. I figured it was ungooglable so no one would find me there under it. When AiROW shut down, a bunch of us migrated here. This was several years later, and I was no longer so into the name. But, I wanted my old AiROW buddies to recognize me, so it became my Fluther name too. Cool story, I know.

Brian1946's avatar

My legal name is Brian Nineteenfortysicks, which almost rhymes with my birth year. -p

Paradox25's avatar

Well paradox has several meanings and it being a fact that I’m interested in anything considered odd or unique <—- (one definition of paradox) such as the paranormal, electricity, ufo’s, etc. 25 is the number of my birthdate which I have used since users on other sites have used my initial name paradox.

gailcalled's avatar

It’s a pun on my name.

CardAngel's avatar

For years I made handmade mixed-media art cards for elderly, sick or homebound members of the church I belong to and several others. One day a woman at my church called me the Card Angel and then a few other people began to refer to me as such. I liked it since I felt I was bringing a little joy into other people’s lives with my art.

I still make cards but not nearly as many since my disabilities have gotten worse. It is my favorite thing to do. I wanted to make it my profession but life had other plans for me.

TexasDude's avatar

When I was on Answerbag, I went by Noidea831, which was my old AIM username. I made a friend on there (who is now and has been for over three years one of my best friends who I love deeply) and she told me I’m “a real bastard… A fiddle playing creole bastard!” She came up with it because I’m part creole and I was learning fiddle at the time. I promptly changed my name on Answerbag and it stuck when I migrated here.

Fun fact: The friend who gave me this name was actually a jelly very briefly and a lot of people from Answerbag remember watching our friendship begin and flourish.

I really like fairy tales. Of my favorites this ones sounds the most gender neutral. People would be even more confused about my gender if I was going by “Sweetheart Roland” or “The Robber Bridegroom”.

Velocipede is an old term for bicycle, velo for short. I’ve been an avid cyclist for a long time. I used to love the almost meditative state when out on a ride of 60 or 70 miles. I rode my bike to enjoy riding my bike. Then I heard this story:

A Zen Teacher saw five of his students return from the market, riding their bicycles. When they had dismounted, the teacher asked the students,

“Why are you riding your bicycles?”

The first student replied, “The bicycle is carrying this sack of potatoes. I am glad that I do not have to carry them on my back!”

The teacher praised the student, saying, “You are a smart boy. When you grow old, you will not walk hunched over, as I do.”

The second student replied, “I love to watch the trees and fields pass by as I roll down the path.”

The teacher commended the student, “Your eyes are open and you see the world.”

The third student replied, “When I ride my bicycle, I am content to chant, nam myoho renge kyo.”

The teacher gave praise to the third student, “Your mind will roll with the ease of a newly trued wheel.”

The fourth student answered, “Riding my bicycle, I live in harmony with all beings.”

The teacher was pleased and said, “You are riding on the golden path of non-harming.”

The fifth student replied, “I ride my bicycle to ride my bicycle.”

The teacher went and sat at the feet of the fifth student, and said, “I am your disciple.”

White noise is random, static noise with an the same avergae amplitude all over the spectrum.

That is a bit like me, I have an opinion on many things, that can be very different from topic to topic. I’m all over the place.

Berserker's avatar

Mine is from a play by Shakespeare called Cymbeline. I just though I was all original by replacing the C with an S. I chose that back on AnswerBag though, and was too lazy to think up something new when I came here. I should have picked Chainsaw or Xena. But eh, really I’m fine with it.

GoldieAV16's avatar

Goldie is one of my real life nicknames, and I found Fluther when I was kicked off of Askville, along with a group of others who came to be known as “The AV 16.”

That was so long ago, I wouldn’t mind dropping the AV16 part…

Like @Mariah mine is a name that is not my name. It does have a small connection to Wilma Flintstone, but that is a longer story.

Kardamom's avatar

I love to cook. Indian food is my absolute favorite and the spice cardamom, that is often used in Indian cooking is really delicious and smells wonderful. The squash was just a nifty photo that I took at the fair and kind of went along with my interest in cooking.

tedibear's avatar

@GoldieAV16 – If you PM @augustlan she can change it for you. I dropped the “39” from my name a while back.

Berserker's avatar

Aye, Auggie will change it; but only once, so make sure the change is what you really want. She can change it more than once, but other than the one chance you get, it has to be for a real valid reason.

SpatzieLover's avatar

88 is double infinity sideways.

That’s all I wrote.

FutureMemory's avatar

Mine is from the movie Excalibur. Towards the end, just before the final battle against his nephew-son Mordred, king Arthur pays a visit to his estranged wife Guenevere for some friendly chit-chat (they hadn’t seen each other in some twenty odd years, so they had a bit of catching up to do). During their wrinkler’s reunion he said to her “I was not meant to live a man’s life, but to be the stuff of Future Memory”.

Don’t give me any lurve, please. I’ve cut and pasted that answer six times now.

Berserker's avatar

@FutureMemory Lol. I gave you lurve anyway. That movie kicks ass, it’s awesome that your username comes from it.

FutureMemory's avatar

<shakes fist at Symbeline>

You are so evil!

Berserker's avatar

Oh yeah well…WHOM DO YOU SERVE???

Berserker's avatar

Damn straight. TO WAAAAR!!

JilltheTooth's avatar

Because I am legally the Second (named after my mom) some friends started calling me “The Twoth” and it became Tooth. It was the 70s and we were really impressed with our own cleverness. I also got a frog tattooed on my boob in the 70s. Kinda splains the mindset.

Judi's avatar

@JilltheTooth , I got a ladybug tatooed on my hip in the early 80’s. looks like we were cool before it was cool.

FutureMemory's avatar

@JilltheTooth Wow! Your name actually makes sense now. After all this time…

JilltheTooth's avatar

And you guys just thought I had funky dentition, huh…

SpatzieLover's avatar

My name is on my Birth Certificate and the police car was issued to me by my police department.

What else can I say?

Bent's avatar

In a reply on my question about the fluther community, Marinelife said that with a username like mine I would fit in well here (I wonder why? O.O ). The reason I picked “Bent” is twofold: It refers partly to my sexuality (not straight) and also to my disability (I have scoliosis; abnormal curvature of the spine).

gailcalled's avatar

@Bent: That sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I too have scoliosis, but luckily a mild form.

Keep your homophones straight and your apostrophes in check here, and you can be as bent as you like in any other areas.

It’s a given that you already seem to be at home.
