Suggest a good read for me.

Asked by jazmina88 (11652points) January 29th, 2012

I have started reading again. I love stories with heritage of any world nation. Mexico, Africa.
Gabriel Marquez is usually my fave author. Personal with heart and custom.

I’m sucking through a novel a day. and need more input.

If you like Marquez, you will probably like Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz

Also, it (they?) may sound corny, but I think One Thousand and One Nights is (are?) lovely.

Are you willing to go the Asian route? Lisa See has some lovely books; Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is good, and I’m in the middle of Shanghai Girls as we speak.

Laura Joh Rowland writes a detective series set in 17th century Japan, it’s very different and interesting. The first one is Shinju.

And Amy Tan is always good.

How about changing it up and reading Guns, Germs and Steel:The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond?
It is an easy read and you will learn how cultures rise and fall, and how quickly their fortunes can be influenced by external factors.

Herman Wouk wrote a good read about the birth Of Isreal. It was pretty interesting. I can’t think of the title right now but I can go look if you’re interested.

Keep in going…....Thank you!!!!

@Adirondackwannabe Yes, I would love the title, if you have a minute…...No rush. This will get me started.

I just finished The Poisonwood Bible. Liked how it relates to my sisters and I. There were 4 of us.
and read Love In Times of Cholera. read them both completely in 3 days. I think I should re-read Hundred Years of Solitude as well. and also The Four Agreements, a Toltec philosophy.
I apologize for not italicizing. I actually used to write about music. I am simple with my computer skills. with my ADD and ramblings and emoticons, you guys dont hate :)
