Is it safe to take 5-HTP and Guarana at the same time?

Asked by xjustxxclaudiax (1963points) January 30th, 2012

I’m thinking about taking Guarana and 5-HTP in pill forms as a way to help me with work and the stress it gives me. I’m wondering if taking both will be dangerous to my health. Are there any risks?

You should ask the chemist where you buy them. In fact, you should always buy all your meds from the same chemist because their computers will alert them if you get a scrip for meds that have a dangerous interaction.

As @HungryGuy previously stated, it’s always a good idea to get your doctor or pharmacist’s opinion on the matter, even if you think (or know) they’ll be ok together. Unless of course it says right there on the bottle “Do not take with ___” then you should consult a professional.

I checked a drug interaction website and no contraindications for your combo was found. Knowing that Guarana is an herb that hasn’t been properly researched, i added “caffeine” to the interaction mix to make double-sure. The reason I added caffeine is that it affects the nerves and adrenals the same way Guarana does. The website still claims the combo is safe. Of course, read the website’s disclaimer.
