Who are the best Republicans in the US from the Democrat perspective?

Asked by wundayatta (58722points) February 1st, 2012

More importantly, what makes them appealing to Democrats? I am not talking about the current batch of presidential candidates. I am talking about all Republicans around the country at any level of government who might easily generate a national profile. Which ones are most appealing to Democrats and why?

I respect Olympia Snowe (Maine). Less prone to shrill partisanship than many from either party. Good coalition builder. One of the remaining level-heads.

John Huntsman. He’s intelligent, he’s experienced, ad mots importantly he’s rational. He has his point of view, but he will listen to the other side, and will negotiate. Unfortunately, all those qualities carry high negatives amongst the Republican base.

I had a lot of respect for Rudy Giuliani for his policies regarding illegal immigrants. He wasn’t on a tear just trying to kick them out. He knew doing that would hurt us as much as it hurt them. Instead he did things like helping ensure their children had access to schools and that they could report crime without fear of being deported. But then he backpedaled on his position when faced with bitter anti-immigrant sentiment during his presidential campaign. #%$@ politians.

John McCain. It was desperate, picking Sara Palin to be his VP candidate. Maybe he thought it was a brilliant move. Big mistake. If he had Karl Rove on his side a decade ago, he would be President and not GW Bush. McCain could be a political whore if he wants to but deep inside I think he could be a moderate, pragmatic Republican.

During his presidential campaign, a lady told him that Obama is a Muslim and instead of doing a “Santorum Assholusm”, McCain politely corrected this deranged lady. Imho, he’s a real honorable fellow.

The current republicans make George Bush Senior look like a liberal. I think if he had to play politics in this climate it would turn his stomach. I never thought I would say this about him, but compared to today’s GOP he was a gentleman and a statesman.

I’ve always liked Orrin Hatch. Until the threat of a primary, he was always a pretty staunch conservative willing to explain why he voted the way he did to everyone. I find John Huntsman to be a solid Republican; he puts policy and intelligence above talking points and ideology.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie,
former Florida Governor Charlie Crist,
Jon Huntsman,

All three are Republican moderates. I have disagreements with some of their stances, but I respect them.

I think all the best republicans are dead. Lincoln is the only good one I can remember.
