Should Britain hand the Falklands over to Argentina?

Asked by flutherother (34524points) February 3rd, 2012

Britain fought a war to keep the Falklands British but what do you think? Does Britain have a right to these islands?

Probably. By proximity, it makes more sense for Argentina to control the islands.

I think the people who should make that decision are the Falkland Islanders. What do they want?

100 percent with @Bellatrix . Put it to a vote by the people living there.

I just sent an email to Margaret Thatcher asking this question and she sent an email back. It read, Fuck No.

Britain got the Falklands. Argentina got a cheap Cup from the “Hand of God”. Chances are Britain would be up for a trade.

Really, @Bellatrix hit the nail on the head.

Well, here is the thing. Just recently, they have discovered the possibility of oil deposits. Rest assured, this issue is going to have to resolve itself.

Here is an article about the oil grab issue. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-19/britain-s-oil-grab-in-falkland-islands-seen-tripling-u-k-reserves-energy.html

The UK just sent a Navy destroyer down. Why do you think they did that? hmmm….

There isn’t much on the island. I have been joking with hubby that they should be running their navigation classes there rather than Rio because I am sick of him going away to ‘work’ on the beach for at least 5 weeks every year. Ironically, now, he may be down there working setting up new platforms.

Ask the people who live there. The choice should be theirs, 100%.

Why should GB give it up? Why change now?

All I can say, is that the South Americans make doing business down there as difficult as possible for outsiders. As a result of the oil finds, Argentinian government has decided that any ship, on it’s way to the Falklands, needs a special permit to traverse Argentinian territorial waters. It is heating up and I would NOT be surprised to see another war.

I also agree with @Bellatrix. Self-determination for the residents.

No.

Should Britain return Gibraltar to Spain?

Should Spain return Ceuta to Morocco?

Should Israel return Israel to Palestine?

Should Poland return East Prussia to Germany?

My answer always is: No.

Let’s not open this can of worms.
