How do you feel about double dipping?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) February 7th, 2012

Do you do it or do you frown upon someone else who does it?

This is referring to taking a chip, dipping it once in the dip, taking a bite, then dipping a second time.

Vehemently against it.

GoldieAV16's avatar

Not okay. Break the chip in half and dip each half.

zenvelo's avatar

Only George Costanza does it. Gross!

If I see someone double dipping, ill take a pass on that container for the rest of the night.

My respect for the person takes a nosedive. Were they raised by wolves or something ?

All types of pathogens can be transferred on a chip. I’d rather pick one up off the floor. There are far less germs there than in human saliva.

Somehow I caught pneumonia and if i knew who I got it from I’d gladly strangle them.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@zenvelo I was thinking it’s up there with peeing in the shower.

wilma's avatar

Yuck!
Don’t do it in front of me, I’ll call you on it.
I’ll make sure everyone in the room knows that that dip is contaminated.
The same goes for people who are working with food and lick their fingers.
My mother-in-law, is a finger licker, Thanksgiving is a real challenge for me.

@Adirondackwannabe

Surprisingly, urine is usually sterile, absent a URI.

person in the shower is not subjecting anyone else to infection. Far more benign than the double dip. Besides, it gets washed down the drain instead of sitting in a dish spawning yet more microbes.

But it is kind of yucky still :)

@Buttonstc It was another Seinfield episode. George peed in the shower at the gym. With other guys showering around him.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Thanks for the reminder. Ha ha. Good ol’ Seinfeld.

If I really know the people I’m with, I don’t mind if they double dip…unless they are sick or something. It never bothers me if I know the people well. If it were a large group of people, say 7+ I wouldn’t do it because then it just becomes too much of a mixture.

LuckyGuy's avatar

What? You didn’t get enough fat on the first scoop? Nope! Not allowed!

@wilma My brother-in-law licks his fingers and samples when he carves the turkey. Yuk!
We do Thanksgiving at our place now. I can assure you there is no finger lickin’ until the food is on your plate.

For me, it depends on the situation. If it’s just my husband and me sharing some chips and dip, I don’t care. I get all his germs from kissing and stuff anyway. If I am at a party or something like that, then definitely no double dipping!

Paradox25's avatar

I don’t think highly of it, no matter who does it or the situation. If someone even takes a sip of my drink or a bite of my food I tell them to just have it.

digitalimpression's avatar

Not good. Nor is the touch-every-chip-in-the-bag-before-taking-one guy.

marinelife's avatar

Not sanitary.

deni's avatar

I do it all the time. Unless I’m at a party with people I don’t know. But usually at home, or at a friends house with just a few of us, no one gives a shit.

wundayatta's avatar

I’m in the “yuck” crowd. Although, at home, the rules are more relaxed.

Coloma's avatar

It is only acceptable when you are the only one dipping. Maaaybe, when it comes to a close, significant other, but public DD’ing is a big, fat no no!

sleepdoc's avatar

That’s why there should be a bowl for everyone’s salsa when you go out to eat

ragingloli's avatar

Even I am not enough of a pussy to care about that.

Kardamom's avatar

The thought of it makes me sick and the actuality of it could make me sick for reals. If I see it being done, I will not partake of that bowl of dip again.

Supacase's avatar

It is disgusting. I can’t think of much that would make me stop eating faster. I don’t usually care if it is my husband or daughter, but I still try to avoid it out of habit.

Coloma's avatar

I just shared an apple with the muley girl “Dove” over here. A bite for me, a BIG bite for her. I conceded to giving up the rest of the apple once she started to foam and drool apple juice. lol

Kardamom's avatar

@Coloma That’s so funny, because I just realized that it doesn’t really bother me to eat something that my dog or cat has licked.

Coloma's avatar

@Kardamom Haha, me either. One of my cats loves yogurt, we always share. :-P

YARNLADY's avatar

Oh, you mean eating – I thought you meant people who take early retirement from one government job and then get hired to do either the same job or another government job, getting paid both their retirement pay and their regular salary.

To answer your question, in certain family situations, such as sharing with the preschoolers, it’s not too gross, but most of the time, I would simply take some of the dip on my own plate and stop using the common dip.

Aster's avatar

I must be a total slob because I’m not sure I’d ever notice!

Hain_roo's avatar

It’s gross! Total turn off/ bad manners.
But- I don’t mind it if people (I’m close to) eat off my plate or sip my drink.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Couldn’t care less.

gravity's avatar

I didn’t used to care about it until I came down with a chronic auto immune disease that is passed through saliva. I now won’t let anyone drink after me or eat from my food or the other way around… especially my little nieces or nephews. I will sometimes dip and bite the chip or fry and then turn it around and dip the side that is not bitten. But I guess I don’t in a large group of people. lol

Neizvestnaya's avatar

It’s gross. If alone, I do as I please but I think it’s impolite to do with shared company. I don’t want anyone to be thinking about my saliva and broken chip bits when they should just be happy snacking away.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I’m with @deni and most of the time it doesn’t bother me. If I am with a group of complete strangers then I wouldn’t do it or want others to do it but if I am with friends or loved ones it doesn’t bother me. I don’t wrooy too much about germs in general and Like @Coloma said, I have been known to continue eating something my dog has sneakily licked (ice cream for example)!

Coloma's avatar

@Leanne1986 Now a Scottish Highlander cow…there’s a drooley, sloppy, lickie, long tongued snack pal. lol

OpryLeigh's avatar

I’ve just noticed a really annoying typo in my previous answer. “Wrooy” was meant to say worry!

@Coloma I’ve had a horse steal my sandwich before. I didn’t bother trying to share that one!!!
