In honor of Valentine's Day, what is your pick for the most romantic song?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) February 14th, 2012

I like “The Story” Brandi Carlyle and “Come Away with Me” Norah Jones, and lots of others.

What do you think is the most romantic song?

@janbb mentioned my first choice.

These are a couple of my absolute favourites though.

The Look of Love – Dusty Springfield.

Open Arms – Journey.

These were our wedding songs too… we couldn’t pick one to dance very badly to.

For me, Prince is the master of love songs…
Diamonds and Pearls
The Most Beautiful Girl in the World
Kiss
Nothing Compares 2 U
Insatiable

I love many more, I’m a sucker for love songs, but for simplicity’s sake, I’ll stick with Prince today…

My Funny Valentine as sung by Ella Fitzgerald. Her voice would remove barnacles trom a boat’s keel.

fundevogel's avatar

I’m not really into love songs, but it’s hard to top Hallelujah. And none of this Jeff Buckley nosense either. Leonard Cohen all the way.

rebbel's avatar

I was about to say My Funny Valentine, by Chet Baker, but that was before I saw that gail already suggested the song.
Unfortunately I cannot find the total song online, but in this small part of Heavenly Bird by Rory Block you might already hear the beauty.
It is from the album House of Hearts.

@augustlan My husband and I heard that on an episode of Gray’s Anantomy and were compelled to look it up. Did you know that it was written by Bob Dylan?

@Rarebear That song is from my era, but I had never heard it it. Thank you for introducing it to me.

@gailcalled That is my husband’s and my song. I first heard it played by Tommy Flanagan, but the Ella version has come to be my favorite.

gailcalled's avatar

@rebbel: In addition to being musically impeccable, Rory Block lives about 20 minutes from me, in a nearby piece of paradise.

rebbel's avatar

@gailcalled Awesome! (just kidding)
No, really, that is pretty neat.
If if it was me that lived that close to her, and she would not mind, I would like to visit her and tell her and thank her for it that she made the most beautiful and emotional song.
The song dedicated to her son who died in a car crash; House of Hearts.

First I must second The Luckiest by Ben Folds, also Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and course Misty by Ella Fitzgerald.

Aww, bless.

fundevogel's avatar

Andrew Jackson Jihad did a few love songs.

@ucme I like Loudon Wainwright III’s version.

Edit: both NSFW

@fundevogel Ahh yes, sounds so much more, err…....polite.

fundevogel's avatar

@ucme Let’s go with ‘traditional’ :)

@marinelife Everybody should know that that song was written by Bob D! The best songwriter ever, of course he wrote that.

Not meant as offense, I am not saying that everybody knows that, I just wish everybody knew.

Oh-most of all this : You’re Still The One

My parents’ song, it’s their 23 wedding anniversary today, but apart instead of together this time.

I think mine would be Can’t Help Falling in Love With You, by either Elvis or Ingrid Michaelson.

Zombie Boy by Unter Null. Hey it actually is pretty romantic if you pay attention to the lyrics. I sent it to someone I like, too. ^^ I would have got him a Misfits shirt or something, but I’m cheap. :D

Somebody by Depeche Mode.

A real oldie, ”‘Til the End of Time.”

augustlan's avatar

@eiram and @marinelife I just found out it was written by Dylan yesterday. I’ve loved the song for years, but was only initially familiar with the Billy Joel version. My husband sings it to me. :D Adele’s version makes me want to sob (in a good way), though.

marinelife's avatar

@augustlan Yes, I cried like a baby when I first heard Adele sing that song. I was crying yesterday when I went to your link. Someone called (luckily my husband) and I had to explain why I was all choked up.

lonelydragon's avatar

“You’re My Best Friend” by Queen.

Bellatrix's avatar

@lonelydragon that was the ring tone (the real song not a phony ring tone) for when my husband called me on my mobile. I haven’t worked out how to do that on this phone yet.

john65pennington's avatar

Lonelydragon, best friends are truly hard to find and keep.

Good choice. me

lifeflame's avatar

Leonard Cohen too, but I’d pick I’m Your Man
The lyrics are priceless.

——

If you want a lover
I’ll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I’ll wear a mask for you
If you want a partner
Take my hand
Or if you want to strike me down in anger
Here I stand
I’m your man

If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
I’ll examine every inch of you
If you want a driver
Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
You know you can
I’m your man

Ah, the moon’s too bright
The chain’s too tight
The beast won’t go to sleep
I’ve been runnin’ through, these promises to you
That I made and I could not keep

Ah but a man never got a woman back
Not by beggin’ on his knees
Or I’d crawl to you baby
And I’d fall at your feet
And I’d howl at your beauty
Like a dog in heat
And I’d claw at your heart
And I’d tear at your sheet
I’d say please
I’m your man

And if you’ve got to sleep a moment on the road
I will steer for you
And if you want to work the street alone
I’ll disappear for you
If you want a father for your child
Or only wanna walk with me a while
Across the sand
I’m your man
