I’m surprised health isn’t number one for everyone. Nothing else matters if you don’t have your health.

Nothing else matters? Nothing else matters? How about chocolate?!

@bkcunningham ” Nothing else matters if you don’t have your health.”
Quite the contrary, things matter no less when you don’t have good health, in fact chronic ill health only sharpens one’s awareness of how much things do matter.

bkcunningham's avatar

Aahhh, I see what you mean, @Adagio. Of course you are correct, if your things matter less than my things. Do you see what I mean, Grasshopper? haha bk

fundevogel's avatar

@Symbeline oh…someone restored quality on that. I prefer the old one that was chewed to bits with bad compression. It just fit.

JLeslie's avatar

@Adagio I think it depends on the health issue, and the personality of the person and their coping skills. For me, being in chronic pain made feel as though I was imprisoned. Plus, I had pretty bad anxiety dealing with the doctors. Every day that I don’t have pain is bliss. I dread giving up my bliss. Another bad chronic pain situation would cause me to be fairly miserable I think. Other health problems I might be able to handle better, but chronic pain and discomfort, I would give up a lot not to have that again. I am a total freak when someone with a cold gets near me, because I don’t want to give away another week of my life being miserable with a stuffed nose. Not if I can avoid it.

I’m just going to say that health is number one. If you don’t have that nothing else much matters.

downtide's avatar

I disagree about health being number one. Without freedom, happiness and love, even 100% perfect health isn’t enough. Not for me anyway.

@downtide See, that is where it gets tricky. For me when I was unhealthy I felt less free. I complained about the loss of freedom more than anything. I also was never very happy when I was in pain every day for years. I had things I could enjoy, but overall I hated my situation, was pretty sad about it. I had love, but it strained my marriage a lot, and even my family, the interaction with family was altered a little.

There is an old question, if you have to choose, do you choose mental illness of physical illness? Even when I was young I used to say mental, because when a person is physically ill, they usually wind up having a mental component with it anyway.

I’m not saying your answer is wrng for you, just thought I would explain my own answer in comparison to yours.

Sex is so high on the list for me because I have only ever had sex whilst in love. For me it is an extension of my love and not just an act.

Money is only above freedom because, since I struggle financially I have come to realise that, freedom is much easier to obtain when you have the funds to support it.

1. Happiness
2. Freedom
3. Nature
4. Art
5. Love (there is no such a thing as love until you’re happy with and love yourself first)
6. Health (what good is my health if I’m not emotionally happy and have nobody to love)
7. Sex
8. Money
9. Chocolate
10. Wisdom (which is inevitable for me if I live my life the way I want to, and through experience)

flutherother's avatar

8.1 Happiness
7.9 Freedom
7.4 Love
7.4 Health
6.0 Wisdom
4.8 Sex
4.4 Nature
3.6 Money
3.5 Art
2.1 Chocolate

Scoring everyone’s list with 10 for the top answer and 1 for the bottom gives an average list as above. Happiness, freedom, love and health matter more than anything else, wisdom is also highly rated and everything else is icing on the cake.
