How important is it to apply at a job that relates to your field of study?

Asked by auhsojsa (2516points) February 16th, 2012

I’m an art multi media major. I need a job that pays so internships won’t cut it. My ultimate goal is to be a musician but have the education behind me after my days of music are done and I could just work behind the scenes at news station. Does it make a difference if I work at FedEx versus some place where artist and musicians hang? Thoughts? Perceptions?

I think that any work experience is fine. To see if you can find something in your field, check with the career center at your college.

It seems that your aspirations somewhat track how my young adulthood unfolded.

My advice is to take advantage of any internship you can. You are already wise enough to realize that unless you get profoundly lucky the music career has a limited life span and you must prepare for what comes after. If you do not begin gathering experience in the career you expect to work in after the music career winds down you will find yourself at a significant disadvantage. When you decide to get your first “real” job you are going to be competing (and make no mistake, it is a competition) against people a decade younger, willing to work for almost nothing as they do not yet have the responsibilities that generally come with maturity, plus they will be able to list those internships on their resume that they were doing while you were out doing the musician thing.

I am, of course, in no way discouraging your musical aspirations. I’m just saying that from personal experience you’ve gotta pull double duty working towards the alternate career while you are doing it in order not to put yourself at a disadvantage later on.

If your major was music, then that must be your first love. You may not be able to find a fitting job for your education, at first, but never give up.

It takes sheer determination to land the job you truly want.

Yes, hang out at music locations in your spare time. Destiny may be waiting there for you.

Is it just a job? Then it doesn’t matter. Is it your career? Then it matters.
