What does it feel like when you are a pallbearer?

Asked by pshizzle (1100points) February 19th, 2012

What does it feel like when you are holding the casket in your hands? Can you feel and/or hear anything move around inside? Just wondering, because I have to be a pallbearer for the first time soon. Thank you.

There’s no sound or movement from inside the casket. The only thing I have ever felt was sadness and wonder. Sadness, because I knew the deceased, and wonder because it made me ponder life and death and whether there is an existence beyond death.

Awkward. You feel honored and too small for it at the same time. You are focused on the weight and making sure it goes smoothly, but still you are doing the pondering @CaptainHarley is talking about.

I often think it is a gift to have that role, as you have something positive you can do to help out the aggrieved and it keeps your mind occupied.

No shifting weight in the 3 or 4 times I’ve done it. Highly variable how much weight you have to support, however. It not only depends on the weight of the casket but on how much others are helping & how long to carry. Be prepared to work a bit, especially with frail or elderly honorary bearers. Do the math: pounds per person.
