How can I preserve rose clippings until it's time to plant them?

Asked by Anatelostaxus (1428points) March 6th, 2012

How can I preserve rose clippings (and those of other propagating plants) until their planting season?
I have several rose clippings at the moment. some from before the past winter (-20) which I have dipped in water until now. Some others just laying around in the garden awaiting their fate. The soaked ones are not rotten (yet).
All are in good condition. various sizes.
I’m just at, say, my second stage of the rose cultivation science.

HELP! (cries the crowd of thorny green stems)

I think you can store them in just barely damp vermiculite. I can double check on that if you’d like. I have a pretty good garden library at home.

@Anatelostaxus, why don’t you just leave them in the water? If you’ve propagated them and kept them this long, I think you should just keep doing what you are doing until it is the season to plant them.

Are these stem cuttings that have roots or simply naked twigs?

I think the water will keep them. Plant in April

Hey !@Adirondackwannabe I’d like that very much ;-) of course if the result would be any other pearl from the green book.. even more. but I trust your already already made statement. checking into it now

@bkcunningham Perhaps, yes. Tend to agree. Although they haven’t actually been propagated in this manner yet.
Which brings me to:

@gailcalled simply naked twigs. hmf.. lame, ey? too early to do anything?

@jazmina88 I think the water might be good as well. But in April? just today an egregious old lady claimed September as “The” month.
But I am eager.. so..

With all of your recent gardening questions @Anatelostaxus, I’d say you need to head to the library and read some books on propagating.

Also, I think you’d like this documentary, A Man Named Pearl I recall you’re not in the USA, you can buy/rent the DVD of this if you don’t have HGTV.

The gist of the film and of Pearl’s wisdom: Plant things in the ground. They want to grow.
