Can you help fill in the blanks of this line of lyrics?

From memory, I thought ”... burning up the fuel up here alone”, though I see some listing it as “burning up his fuse”. I haven’t heard the song in a long time.

But I can tell you it wasn’t David Bowie, unless the rocketman in question was Major Tom. :)

Rocket Man is an Elton John song. I just went and listened to it again. It is hard to get that sentence but I looked up a couple of lyric pages and then listened again. I think it is… I am as certain as I can be.
