Am I able to drink alcohol while on my medication?

Asked by jesslc323 (127points) March 17th, 2012

I am taking Zoloft/ Sertraline at 50mg for my anxiety.
I have had no side affects what so ever and am not a big drinker to begin with.
I was wondering if it would be okay just to have 1 beer or just 1 drink in general with a meal. I know it is a depressant and I dont want to mess around..

There was probably a lot of information given to you with your prescription. Did this information address that question? Your best bet is to ask your doctor that prescribed this drug as he/she will know your medical background.

Alcohol and Zoloft affect similar chemicals in the brain. This means that Zoloft can enhance the effects of alcohol when combined. If you feel that you cannot abstain from alcohol, you should drink only light to moderate amounts of alcohol while you are taking Zoloft. Also, when you are drinking do not add alcoholic beverages at the same time you are taking Zoloft. The ‘official’ word says that combining alcohol and sertraline is not recommended. Zoloft slows down the brain’s ability to reabsorb serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter responsible for sending nerve impulses between nerve cells. Serotonin influences the mood too. Alcohol also affects the levels of serotonin in the brain. Therefore, using these two can result in unwanted and unexpected emotions

look on the bottle for a warning. and ask your pharmacist.

I agree with jazmina88. If it’s not too embarrassing for you, ask the pharmacist, or call your doctor. If the pharmacist gives you an unsure answer, read the label. It’ll take you five minutes.

@jesslc323 Yes, welcome to Fluther. Glad to have you with us. Here’s information on using alcohol while on Zoloft. The two potentiate on another, so if you do drink while taking Zoloft, do so in moderation.

Ask a pharmacist or your physician.

You can probably get away with drinking a little, like one beer a week. Don’t go drinking everyday and stay away from the hard stuff.

I wouldn’t want to take a chance regarless what anyone tells me, unless they are phrmacists. Even they would be going by the vast majority cases, and you could be one of the rare people where that could cause a rare problem.
