Hard drive fell on floor: how do I recover?

Asked by wundayatta (58722points) April 1st, 2012

I was backing up my son’s computer and somehow the hard drive ended up falling to the floor. Now I can’t access it. Are there good recovery services you know of? Are there any tricks for getting it to read the drive again? It holds all my files, too.

Looks like your HDD is physically damaged, so chances for you to recover anything yourself are almost zilch.
And according to this, the average cost for professional recovery by an expert company is 1500$.
Only worth the money for businesses who need to recover important files. For private purposes, I would just move on.

Is it the external hard drive? If so, it may be the circuitry connecting the disk to the enclosure that is damaged. You might try removing the disk and connecting through a cable or dock.

It isn’t necessarily destroyed. It may still work.

I’m guessing the heads have been damaged. Maybe out of alignment.
