Bringing plants into Oregon on the plane?

Asked by AmyO (20points) April 1st, 2012

I’m traveling to Oregon this week and will be attending a plant society show. I would like to bring a couple of potted plants to enter in the judged show. Does anyone know if I will be able to bring the plants with me in a carry-on or should I pack them into my checked baggage? Or will they be confiscated upon entering Oregon? Thanks.

Most of the West coast has pretty strict codes about not bringing anything like plants in. I’m guessing you get yourself into a major jam over it.. Welcome to fluther.

Call your airline.

Do the people sponsoring the show have any information about that? They probably have experience with the issue. There must be a way to do it legally, you just have to jump through the right hoops.

Thanks all! I’ve contacted the organiser of the show and they have given info on obtaining a phyto certificate. Which costs more than the plants are worth. So I will not bring any plants with me after all. :-/

“Various restrictions may apply and certain certifications may be required, depending on the type of plants and the state of origin. See a summary of import quarantines at:

Yes, I did see that page already and was hoping there might be a skip if I was just bringing in a couple for display purposes only. I’m going to call the OR ag. person and see if there’s a loophole or something.
Thanks for your response.
