Can I get this polyester rayon blend to shrink in the wash?

Asked by wallabies (1081points) April 16th, 2012

I want to shrink a garment that is 65% poly, 35% rayon. Can I shrink it in the wash? And if so, what’s the best way to wash it to do this without ruining the fabric? It says cold hand wash separately do not soak….

Polyestere does not shrink. Rayon usually shrinks like crazy. I have a feeling with that ratio the garment won’t shrink much, not sure. Throw it in the dryer after you wash it, see what happens. Not too high a heat since it is mostly synthetic.

Rayon also can wrinkle a lot, deoending on the rayon, but I doubt that will be a problem with all that polyester.

How much do you want to shrink it?

If it is a fit issue, you would be better off to find a tailor/seamstress and have it modified to fit.

Let us know what you find out if you try it.

If you can get it to shrink (with the poly it may not) are you aware that rayon usually pulls up when it shrinks – so you will not get allover shrinkage – it will mainly be shorter (the warp threads seem to shrink the most) but just as wide (the weft). I don’t know why it shrinks that way, but I have ended up with accidentally too short clothes many times when I forgot and dried something in a warm dryer.
