Does anyone remember the US television series 'Soap'?

Asked by SomeoneElse (2708points) April 18th, 2012

I adored this series, and watched it in Berlin on AFN. I would love it on DVD but can only seem to find it on Region1 while the UK uses Region 2 DVDs.
Help, please, if you can – nothing technical please as I have trouble with technical . . .

I remember it. It was very funny and ahead of its time. Early Billy Crystal, Ted Wahl, Katherine whatever her name was. How you could get it, though, I don’t know.

I remember it fondly. I assume you googled it, since that’s what I would do. I’m sorry that I can’t help you find a DVD… Oh, I see you just got an address to try. I’ll try it too.

I only ever watched one series as a kid, after that I washed my hands of it.

I remember it. It was a great show.

It was a good show! At the time, it was considered “ahead of the curve” because they talked openly about the character of Jody being gay. I liked the mix of weirdness in it.

I think you’re psychically linked to my husband. He just mentioned this show last night. I’d never heard of it before then.

Here is season one of _Soap on Amazon that is Region 2 formatted.

You might want to try a DVD store in your area. There is a “That’s Entertainment” store in the local mall that carries DVDs of television series. Right now, their online site has season one and two available. Since the rest of the seasons are available on DVD, they might be able to order the box set for you.

That show was hysterical. If you do track it down, can I come over and watch it with you? I’ll bring snacks.

Loved that show. Very clever and innovative. According to Sony Entertainment only season 1 was released in the UK (region 2).

Why not just drop 30 quid on a multi-region DVD player and then you can get whatever you want?

@zigmund: There you go.

Thank you all so much for all the information – I shall not give up on this quest!
I thought it was wonderful, so crazy. I thought Billy Crystal was amazing, and the rebel leader, Juan Juan and his 2nd-in-command, Juan Two . . just brilliant.
I also loved ‘Twin Peaks’ when that started. These shows were always hidden away on BBC 2 when that wasn’t a popular television channel – considered ‘arty’ when it started.

I own the first two seasons on DVD. I’m not sure I’ve ever watched all of them, however except when they were originally aired. It was a particular favorite of my family, especially my grandparents. I was quite young, but found them funny. It was the first gay character on television I had ever seen.

@SomeoneElse You just spoke up about “Twin Peaks” a month too late. The SO and I just got rid of our set (Season One only but in Region Two format). I would have been willing to mail it to you. We bought that at the That’s Entertainment store mentioned above.

@Pied_Pfeffer Thank you for that! I will make a concentrated effort to find these series and wallow in them.

Yes, I do, I am way that old.

Does anyone remember Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman?

It was a soap opera parody too, from a little earlier vintage.

Personally, I liked that much better than Soap.

It wasn’t on the air all that long but it was hilarious.

SomeoneElse's avatar

@lillycoyote I have never heard of that so looked it up! It appeared to be considered too controversial that it was broadcast really late, never mind that it dealt with subjects that were openly discussed on daytime shows.
See what you have done/ Another set of DVDs to search for, but thanks anyway.

lillycoyote's avatar

@SomeoneElse Yes, it was on late, and was kind of controversial at the time. But if you do manage to find it, remember it was from a whole other time, and enjoy! It, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman was an awful lot of fun while it lasted.

And so so sorry to have burdened you with another DVD hunt! Though if you do find it and it doesn’t set you back too much and you really enjoy it then you will be thanking me. I just can’t count on that being the ultimate outcome.

rooeytoo's avatar

@lillycoyote – yep I loved, well maybe not loved, but got a kick out of Mary Hartman, I don’t think I ever watched Soap. I did love it when someone on Mary Hartman drowned in their bowl of soup!

Absolutely! Most of my friends were not allowed to watch it, but I tuned in with my sister and my parents. We loved the show. We still do the snap and pretend we are dissappearing like Bert. Hahaha.

I never watched Mary Hartman Mary Hartman but it was also popular at the time. My mom and I used to watch a show called Fernwood Tonight with Martin Mull. It was really funny, like a spoof talk show. This was all around the same era – mid 70’s.

lillycoyote's avatar

@jca Maybe you know this and just didn’t mention it, but Fernwood 2 Night was a spin off from Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman . Fernwood is the town where Mary, et al, lived and Martin Mull played Garth Gimble, on Mary Hartman, then that character died, and Mull played his brother, Barth Gimble, the talk show host. And some of the characters from Mary Hartman sometimes appeared on Fernwook 2 Night.

@lillycoyote This is getting good! It’s a bit like hearing just a snippet of a conversation, being curious about the rest and annoyed because you can’t!

It still reruns on Sundays on Antenna TV, a national network available in these cities.
