Why are my laptop's colors all messed up?

Asked by amazingme (1860points) April 20th, 2012

Normally this would only happen briefly, but the colors of everything seem very bright and less saturated. This has happened a few times before, but only for a few seconds and then would go back to normal. But it has been this way all day. Anyone know anyway to make it normal and prevent it from happening again? I’ve only had my laptop since last June. Thanks!

It actually sounds like a hardware problem. It could be a lot of things, the video chipset, cable, backlight, or screen.

I would be looking into your warranty if I were you.

There’s a couple of things you can check before you need to bring it in for servicing, assuming you’re comfortable doing some self-service and you won’t void your warrantee by opening the computer up. The first thing to check is to make sure the cord connecting your monitor to your video card/motherboard is seated properly. The second is to check whether your laptop is overheating. Laptops are especially prone to heat problems because they have so little space for heat exchange. Do you have a heat monitor installed? Check to make sure the CPU/GPU isn’t getting too hot. Make certain your fans are all turning, and use compressed air to blow out any dust which may have accumulated in your laptop or the laptop’s fans or the power supply. If your CPU or video card uses a heatsink instead of a fan for cooling, check to see whether it’s connected properly with something like Arctic Silver and not just gaskets; manufacturers have been known to scrimp on this and cause heating problems.

I had this exact same problem once and it turned out that one of the pins on the video cable was pushed into the connector visibly farther than the others.
