Chastity belts?

Asked by sufferkate (155points) April 22nd, 2012

Back when women had to wear chastity belts, how did they work when women had to pee, poop, or when they were on their period or when they had to wash? I have been wondering this question for DECADES. Also, didn’t they get an awful lot of UTI’S? And what did they do to cure that before antibiotics were invented?

Welcome to Fluther.

What an amazing first question!

To answer: As the Wikipedia article states, and many other places have confirmed, chastity belts as portrayed in many Medieval accounts and drawings were never in widespread use.

The treatment for UTI’s before antibiotics was herbs, blood letting and rest of which probably only the rest made any difference as UTI’s usually resolve in about 5 days with no treatment.

To say I’ve had an interesting life is an understatement. A doctor and a journalist couple in NYC once took me to a bondage club in the Village. There, I met a young man whose Mistress had given him permission to remove his chastity belt for the night. Watching him contort to undo the locks was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen live.

The whole night was like that. There was one scene involving a Mistress and three Hassidic Jews that I will put into a movie some day.

I am completely cool with people practicing such things. However, like Dorothy, I was so not in Kansas anymore. Put me off sex for several weeks.
