My cat gets bad hair balls how can I help him?

Asked by Brenna_o (1779points) April 23rd, 2012

I have a long hair male cat and he pukes all the time from hair balls. Is there something I can do to help him not get hair balls or help him not throw up so much?

You can give him some of the preventative medication that your vet will have for hairballs. It has a taste that is appealing to cats who will usually eat it from the tube. Another tip is brushing your cat daily.

You can buy hairball formula at the grocery store, which is mostly just petroleum jelly with yummy flavoring. (My cats don’t care about the flavoring – two hate it no matter what, the other will beg you to give her some regardless of tuna additives, so I just use a big tub of petroleum jelly from the shampoo aisle).

Brush him regularly and give baths as needed. I rarely need anything for my cats other than the brush.

As @marinelife said, brushing your cat daily is a good tip. You can also try feeding him anti-hairball formula cat food, which is what we did when our old cat kept coughing up hairballs and it worked pretty well.

One teaspoon of mayonnaise in the food is also beneficial.

Brushing your pet as often as you can as this will help reduce the amount of hair that they shed. You can also give them petromalt, a hairball remedy that cats (and chinchillas) seem to like. It does work wonders and you can get it at almost any pet store in addition you can order it online (does not cost much if you are worried about the cost)

I have a monsterous 16 lb. long hair cat too and I brush and comb him daily and there is a product called “Petromalt” that helps too. It is less than $6 a tube. You can also give him some fish oil. I also always shave my long haired cats in the summer.

@Coloma For the fish oil, can you use those fish oil gel pills (that humans eat)? Or do you have to get actual bottled fish oil? I don’t much about fish oil.

@Plucky Yeah, just cut open the capsule and squeeze it on some canned food or just into their mouth. I just brushed the monster man aka: Myles, lots of hair flying in this warm weather, he gets shaved at the end of May. lol

@Coloma Cool, thank you :)

If he eats dry food, try Science Diet Hairball Protection. It works wonders.

He eats kit n kaboodle it’s his favorite. Is there a dose of fish oil he needs? He is almost 1 and is 7–8 lbs

@Brenna_o A capsule a couple 3 times a week is good, or try the Petromalt.
