Is it okay to turn the icemaker off every other week, we don't use ice cubes much?

Asked by Bruno (14points) April 24th, 2012

My icemaker makes a lot of ice and we don’t use much ice. I am afraid to keep turning it off and on. Will this hurt the icemaker?

I did it when I had an icemaker. Well, I probably only had it on once a month for a few hours, except when people were visiting, other people seem to use a lot of ice. I never had a problem.

Just make sure it is really off, or, you will burn up the pump. I once moved and didn’t hook up the icemaker for a week and it was cycling and burned itself out.

Welcome to Fluther.

All of the residential freezer icemakers that I’ve seen have some form of automatic shut-off when the height of the unused ice gets to a certain point. Is your level indicator damaged in some way?
