What are some movies about computers and hacking?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) May 18th, 2012

I’m not interested in hacking.
I’m just interested in WATCHING movies about computers and hacking.

For example:

WarGames
AntiTrust
The Net
Ghost in the Machine
Hackers -1995

(These are hacking movies I’ve actually seen so that’s why the list is very small.)

If anyone else can recommend a good hacking movie, please do so :)

Sneakers Fun movie; all-star cast. It was sort of sad watching Gandhi play the villain though.

I think one should be aware that hollywood has never really done a very good job of visualizing what real hacking is like. There are never big boxes that people try to lock into place like this.

The Social Network does have a scene that’s a lot more realistic, with command line arguments and scripts.

oh wow, i forgot about “Sneakers”... hahah, great old flick.

There’s always Swordfish, The Matrix, Live Free of Die Hard (love Kevin Smith’s character in that movie) and Johnny Mnemonic

Enemy of the State has a bit of Gene Hackman hacking into surveillance systems.

It’s not the primary story line – but one of the themes in the Millennium Series movies (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, etc) is about Lisbeth Salander and she is an extraordinarily talented hacker.

You can watch the Swedish (w/ English Dub or Subtitles) or the English movie remakes of these books.

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
Die Hard (the first one)

Thanks everyone. I figured if I asked here, I’d get some more titles rather than searching online.

Sneakers. Robert Redford is the main actor in the movie. Very entertaining.

The Swedish version of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo involves a degree of computer hacking. The more recent version may also but I haven’t watched that.

Fun fact. The same writers for WarGames also wrote Sneakers.

I know you asked specifically for movies, but I would like to recommend the TV show NCIS. One of the main characters, Tim McGee is always trying to decode stuff that hackers have done, or hacking into stuff himself.
