What do you think are the top 10 coolest kids' movies of all time?

Asked by spendy (1446points) May 28th, 2008

Could be family movies…but with kids in mind. I’ve gotten this far (in no particular order) and now I’m stumped:

E.T.
The Neverending Story
The Labyrinth
The Goonies

(I’m not even half way…help me out, I know there’s more)

Does anyone remember Short Circuit? :) Not sure about “greatest” but definitely cool.

Forgot about him.

autumnofage's avatar

I can yawn like Littlefoot from Land Before Time when hes curled up on his mama.
I don’t know why I feel the need to state this but oh well :)

babygalll's avatar

Charlotte’s Web

Yes, I remember Short Circuit!

babygalll's avatar

How could I forget Mary Poppins!

spendy's avatar

OH! Dark Crystal? Does that rank?

delirium's avatar

Dark crystal totally ranks.

bmhit1991's avatar

I like the new narnia movies. Most of the Disney classics. And spirited away. Spirited away was not very popular, but was very, very good! I’m going to have to rent it now! The road to el dorado maybe?shrek.
....my mind is drawing a blank… I know there’s more!

….I never like ET…he scared me…hahaha! No lie!

spendy's avatar

I wish there was a Fraggles movie. Dark Crystal made me think of them. :)

lovelyy's avatar

oh! The little mermaid.

autumnofage's avatar

@lovelyy YAY!!!!

sndfreQ's avatar

Yesss…The Dark Crystal!

spendy's avatar

oooooh, Alice In Wonderland

richmarshall's avatar

Finding Nemo!

spendy's avatar

I keep thinking there’s a movie kind of like The Neverending Story or Labyrinth that I’m forgetting. ???

Mtl_zack's avatar

i cant remember the name but it was about a kid who had this train and had to keep the darkness hidden away inside some sort of room and save the train conductor. it was one of my favorites, but now that i look back on it, it was really quite disturbing with many messages of sex and drugs and whatnot. can anyone help me out with the name?

bmhit1991's avatar

YES RICHMARSHALL!!! Now you’re talking!! Disney & Pixar make the BEST movies!! They’re better than just kid movies. They fit your description perfectly, spendywatson! You wanted family movies! I can’t wait for WALL•E! I have a countdown on my dashboard!!

bmhit1991's avatar

1. Finding Nemo
2. The Incredibles
3. A Bug’s Life
4. Ratatoullie
5. Cars
There’s the first half of the list right there!!

babygalll's avatar

The original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

spendy's avatar

I might add Zathura to the list…or Eragon. I have a soft spot for dragon movies.

spendy's avatar

@babygalll, I’ll give you that one, for sure. I’m definitely thinking of some of the older movies – not so much cartoons (though I appreciated Madagascar).

bmhit1991's avatar

eragon was a great movie! It sucked in the context of following the book, but aside from that, it was a great movie. Pirates of the Caribbean? Oh, and star wars! I loved star wars long before I understood what was going on! XD

ebenezer's avatar

watership down
the point

delirium's avatar

Watership down, I think, is better as a book.
And I LOVE the point, although i’ve only read it and heard the music.

Bri_L's avatar

My mind is at the 5 year old range so that is where my list is at.

I have to agree with bmhit1991 on his list ( and WALL•E) I would go with this order and ending though:
1. Toy Story
2. Toy Story II
3. The Incredibles
4. Cars
5. Bugs Life
6. Aladin
7. Sword in the Stone
8. 101 Dalmations
9. Lion King
10. Rattatoui

Now these are it mainly because if it isn’t animated it wont hold their attention yet. Like I said, my frame of reference is 5 years old.

Bri_L's avatar

The Swiss family Robinson

mcbealer's avatar

In no particular order…

Ice Age

Simon Birch

The Iron Giant

Lean on Me

School of Rock

Be Kind Rewind

National Treasure 1 and 2

The Ultimate Gift

Because of Winn Dixie

delirium's avatar

Oooh, seconding Because of Winn Dixie

Bri_L's avatar

Iron Giant, Iron Giant!!

babygalll's avatar

The Outsiders.

bmhit1991's avatar

oh yes ice age! I like the first one a lot more than the second though. And the ultimate gift is a GREAT family movie, but maybe not so great for younger kid’s. Not because it’s inappropriate or anything, they just won’t be able to relate to it as much. Preteens to adults is what I’d say the ultimate gift is best suited for. No curse words or violence either. Great family movie! LOVED IT!!!

Mtl_zack's avatar

madeline(spelling)??

Bri_L's avatar

@ bmhit1991 – Now what did you like better about the first one. I was the complete opposite. I liked them both mind you, but I like the second one way more than the first.

What about

Cheaper by the dozen (the original)

Bri_L's avatar

@ spendywatson – #5 is alive!!

spendy's avatar

I totally forgot about Because of Winn Dixie – we have that one on hand. :)

Wine3213's avatar

I don’t know if anyone said it yet, but how about the Shrek movies.
Also, the Teenage mutant ninja turtles movies.
And who could forget The Jungle Book.

spendy's avatar

On a newer note…I might say The Waterhorse (kinda cute)

spendy's avatar

ooooh, The Princess Bride – I think I used to know every word :)

Did I just admit that?

ebenezer's avatar

In search of the castaways

bmhit1991's avatar

@Bri_L
sorry, can’t remember exactly. It just felt a lot like they tried to “bring it back” just because the first one was a success and they thought it’d be an easy way to make more money. The only time I’ve ever like those are pirates 3 (not 2), and spiderman 3 (also, not 2). The best sequels are like, lord of the rings, or narnia, or star wars, where they were constructed from the beginning as one large story. They fit perfect that way. It’s not just a cheap sequel for more money.

Bri_L's avatar

Right I get what you mean. Well they are making an Ice Age 3.

I actually thought Toy Story 2 was as good if not better than the first and I LOVED the first.

bmhit1991's avatar

…although, they didn’t do such a great job with prince caspian…in my perspective. But i read all the books… I cannot wait for “the last battle” though! Best book in the series by a long shot!!

bmhit1991's avatar

haha. I love Disney and pixar, but never really liked toy story…. You know they’re working on a toy story 3 in 3D?! They’re also releasing the original 1st and 2nd in 3D just before the 3rd one! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the news!

Bri_L's avatar

Don’t like Toy Story?! I don’t even know you bmhit1991! hehe

spendy's avatar

(off topic) – Dang! Thanks guys, I think this many responses in 1 hr is total LURVE!!

bmhit1991's avatar

Bri_L's avatar

I gave you a great answer spendy and I stood up and soluted you to!

bmhit1991's avatar

@Bri_L, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were begging him to give you lurve points…!

pplufthesun's avatar

Undeniably The Iron Giant

Bri_L's avatar

The Goonies! Every kids dream.

bmhit1991's avatar

@marissa
you can’t say “the first three star wars movies” and people understand which one’s you’re talking about…. First three released, (IV “a new hope”, V “the empire strikes back”, & VI “return of the Jedi”), or first three in the story (I “phantom menace”, II, “attack of the clones” & III “revenge of the sith”)

marinelife's avatar

I think Field of Dreams is a good movie for kids to watch.

Maverick's avatar

I think that every Pixar movie needs to be on the list. Ratatoui (sp?) is particularly wonderful and has a great message for kids (even the 40 year old ones).

Bri_L's avatar

I agree, and I am so thankful that my kids can get hooked on watching something 1,000 times that wont make me sick.

babygalll's avatar

Another came to mind today:

Fievel Goes West.

bluemukaki's avatar

The Sandlot (Kids)
The Emperors New Groove
Lilo and Stitch

themherme's avatar

1. Bed nobs and broomsticks
2. Garfield the christmas/halloween special
3. Charlie Browns Christmas
4. Rockadoodle
5. Batteries not included
6. Mac and me
7. Matilda
8. Pagemaster
9. Adams family
10. Greese
Obviously randomly selected :*) hope you like

Bri_L's avatar

@ themherme – SNL just had a skit with Christopher Walkin where they were singin Greased lightning for the high school musical and each questionable phrase they got to “shit” “p**** wagoy” he would stop them saying that they couldn’t do that. The funny thing was the boys would come up with totally functionable lyrics that seemlessly replaced the old ones and he would wave them off.

babygalll's avatar

Girls just want to have fun!

thebeadholder's avatar

I know I am SO late on this one but no one said Stuart Little…so cute!

Bri_L's avatar

we just saw that last night with the kids. GREAT casting in that one!

MattxAmber's avatar

I’m not a mom, but like I am a big sister of like a little girl.

Children don’t deserve movies.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i think one of the best recent kids movies that hasn’t made me want to vomit because of it’s stupidity is madagascar. i’ve yet to see the 2nd one, but i thought the first one was so awesome.
so in no specific order:
1. madagascar
2. aladdin!!!
3. alice in wonderland
4. feivel goes west

6. the dark crystal
7. ice age
8. castle in the sky

Princess Bride; Mary Poppins; Charlotte’s Web; Too many Pixar movies to squeeze in a top 10 list and leave room for others; Ice Age; E.T.; Spy Kids; Tarzan (with Phil Collins’ music); Hook and the Wizard of Oz. Whew.
