Have you tried resetting it with iTunes?

You hosed your SIM card. Take it to your local AT&T store and they’ll give you a new card.

A Personal Unblocking Key (PUK, or Personal Unblocking Code – PUC) is used in mobile phones to unblock a blocked SIM card.

You can call your service provider for your PUC code. The PUC code is an additional level of security, generated on the side of the service provider to block a SIM card if the PIN is entered incorrectly a certain number of times.

Restoring the phone via iTunes will not affect the SIM block, you need to speak to your service provider, who in this case is AT&T.

Oh, and don’t try and guess it. If an incorrect PUC is entered ten times sequentially, your SIM will become permanently blocked and unrecoverable, requiring a replacement.

and that is why I refuse to mess with my iPhone. It is such a hassle

I fixed it, and I know both PUK and SIM number

Call your provider, they will tell you the restart PUK code. It’s a code that unlocks it no matter what you did, good luck.
