Are there any good, cheap digital painting programs or apps?

I have a Bamboo tablet and I’d like to draw and paint stuff on the comp’yuter. But, I would rather not pay $600 for the new Photoshop or whatever. Do you know of anything that lets you paint like on Photoshop, and maybe has layers like Photoshop, but nothing fancier necessarily?
