Has Greyhound bus lines improved over the years?

Asked by jarvin (4points) June 18th, 2012

I hear many unfavorable things about Greyhound buses. Have they got any better or just the same?

I haven’t ridden on one in quite a while, so I can’t say for sure. But Business Week (I think) did an article about them not too long ago – maybe 4–5 months – and said that they had really cleaned up their act.

The problem 5–10 years ago was that they were bought and sold and bought and sold and none of the owners put any investment in new buses, maintenance, training, etc. (for a while they were owned by the same people who own Dial Soap!!)

Whoever owns them now has stabilized things and the company appears to doing well. The company is a British company that runs lots of buses in the UK and appears to know what it is doing.

I’m not sure what you’re starting point is or what your measure of improvement is. But I use Greyhound a few times a year. Its not the most pleasant way to travel, but you get from point A to point B for pretty cheap. It can be a little stressful if you’ve never used them before. Some of the stations are nice enough, other ones are kinda shit holes (Detroit…). They can be kinda unorganized at times. But in general its about what I expect it to be. Not awesome, but it gets the job done, and there’s usually not too many problems or delays. No extreme security checks (they browse your carry on stuff occasionally). Its riding on a bus for many hours with lots of other people.

I always have great bus stories though. lol. But those are for another day.

It has improved over the last decade. I ride it regularly. Be sure to look at the better alternatives to see if they serve your area, especially Megabus.

I rode Greyhound from Montreal, QC to Burlington, VT a couple of years ago. It was fine. The bus was a little warn. For a reasonable short ride I would do it again, but wouldn’t want to do it for a long drive. 4 hours would be about my cut off probably. I think some routes are better than others. Some journeys are more likely to have more rif raf I would guess.
