Do you believe certain movies take place in the same cinematic universe?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) June 19th, 2012

There are obvious examples. Avengers takes place in the same reality as Captain America. Prometheus takes place in the same universe as the Alien movies. Quentin Tarrantino indicates all of his movies happen in the same universe.

Are there certain unrelated movies you like to believe happen in the same universe?

All of Kevin Smith’s movies (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, etc.) take place in the same universe.

On television, Joss Whedon created a “Buffy-verse” with the shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel as well as all related novels and comics. They’re all in continuity.

Soap Operas Young & the Restless and Bold & the Beautiful exist in the same world. They’ve even swapped characters between shows.

Yep.

Thor, The Avengers, and all of the XMen, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man, and Dr. Strange movies take place in the Marvel Universe.

Event Horizon and the Warhammer 40k Ultramarine movie. Event Horizon was obviously a Warp Jump gone wrong which lead to the eventual development of Gellar Fields.

I think movies like Knocked Up, Sleepless in Seattle, 27 Dresses, Everyone Says I Love You, and many other movies take place in the same universe, where beautiful women can’t get dates and end up with less than attractive guys.
Unfortunately, this is not the universe I live in.

I’d like to think that all Pixar movies take place on the same cinematic planet. The people of Incredibles, Up, Wall-E, etc. and the Bugs that inhabit their soil & sky. To the Fish that fill the ocean & the Monsters that lurk in their closets. The Rodents in the field who can cook. The Toys & Cars that only come to life when they aren’t looking. Movies like Brave are the same Universe, just in a different time.

It’s fun to think that the college bound Andy would drive Mater for a summer job towing Cars. When he gets in an accident, Mr. Incredible would come & lift the upturned Mater off of him. While in the hospital, his little sister Molly would tell him about her new best friend Russell & the noises they hear coming from his Closet. She’d bring him a chubby Butterfly in a jar to comfort him. Andy’s doctor is the same guy who gave the bad news to Carl Fredricksen. His mother would bring a bouquet of flowers from a field that began as a Boot. When Andy is released, he feeds the Fish in the lobby aquarium.

@filmfann Apparently you live in the universe where the idea that the beautiful woman is the “prize” for the guy who does whatever the premise is, with no regard for how the woman actually feels, or their suitability as a couple with common goals. As long as people live in that universe, society will continue to labor under that and other detrimental delusions about life.

What about Wes Anderson movies?

I like to imagine that Blue Steel and Young Guns happened in the same universe.. but modern westerns just don’t have.. the something.. that old westerns had.

The Ten Commandments and Transformers movies could have happened in the same fictional universe.

The Simpsons convinced me that Casper is the ghost of Richie Rich. This would mean that their respective films must take place in the same universe.

A bunch of Rodriguez’ movies feel like they exist in the same world to me. Planet Terror, From Dusk Til Dawn, Machete, the Mariachi trilogy. It gets little weird when Danny Trejo bridges the gap between that bunch and the Spy Kids movies…but it does amuse me to think the Machete of Spy Kids is the same guy that repelled down a man’s intestines.

Actually the whole thing gets kinda David Lynch when you think of how many times various actors have died and reappeared. Or just suddenly changed into different characters without anyone noticing. Within the same movie if your name is Cheech Marin.
