Could you give me a couple of tips to create a MS Excel column chart to compare grades of Test 1/Test2?

Asked by Yeahright (3880points) June 25th, 2012

I need to make a comparative chart of Test 1 and Test 2 grades in MS Excel 2007.
This is my data:
Value points: 0–20
Number of students: 35
Grades can go in the vertical axis.
My problem is I don’t want to have each and every of the 35 students grades in a separate column in the horizontal axis but rather, I’d like to group all the students that got 18, 15, 10, etc. in each test. Hope if I am being clear enough. I can’t figure out.
PS: This isn’t homework. I am the teacher comparing T1/T2 results to gather information in order to design Test 3.

What kind of results are you looking for ? I.e. what are you comparing between test1 and test2 ?
Also, I’m not sure I understand what are ‘value points’ ? And when you say ‘group all the students’ do you mean counts of students that got that level of score on the test?

I am comparing how many students got say 20 pts., how many got 15, etc. The top grade is 20 pts. I want to know out of 35 students, how many scored 20 or 18 or whatever. Then, the same for Test 2 but all in one chart.

Then I make the first column those values, 1 through 20, the second column is the count from test1 of students who got the score of the values on that line, the third column is the count of test2 students who got the score on that line.
Then one or two columns next to that you can make a difference column. on the top row type, w/o the quotes: ”=c1-b1” and return. You should get the difference for that top score between test1 and test2. Highlight that field and ‘copy’, paste into the rest of the difference column for the next 19 rows, i.e. for all the results possible. Voila.

Thank you so very much. You are the greatest!
I got the grades in the X axis and the amount of students in the Y axis. Two columns: one for T1 and another for T2. So far so good, but I had to eliminate and do w/o the difference column because it came out with negative numbers since there are grades that no students got. i.e. no one got as low as 1, 2, 3,and others. But what I got is what I essentially needed. I’m now working on the title and the colors and the whole layout but I got all the data in place and can now compare the results between T1 and T2 at a glance. Thanks again.
