NSFW: Do men pose for 'Adult material' for the same reasons women do?

Asked by gottamakeart (1323points) June 25th, 2012

I was curious about this, there seems to be plenty of articles on the web of why women pose for say- a centerfold spread, erotic art,or do a porn movie. BUT, there is no discussion of why guys do it, only that they like to watch it a lot. Is it just “Male Vanity”?

In the case of hardcore pornography, it’s an opportunity to get laid.

In the case of nudity or softcore pornography, the motivation is probably split between money being involved and the opportunity, however misplaced, to show off. Genital displays and the like are a way to show off sexual prowess.

I think this is a good question. The reasons can vary, but many people want to be famous and are wannabe celebrities. Porn, especially on the net today, offers a fairly amount of decent exposure, and perhaps many feel that they can get a ‘break’ by starting somewhere to get their foot in the door. I agree with the above post too. Like said, the reasons can vary regardless of sex/gender.

I find it highly doubtful. I don’t think a lot of the fellas are doing it for diaper money and formula.

or for an outrageous coke habit either . . .

If there’s money involved, then money’s at least part of the equation. Maybe they’re trying to pay rent, pay off student loans, pay child support, pay a drug habit, pay for a lifestyle of nicer cars and bigger tvs they couldn’t have with other jobs…

Exhibitionism tends to be big with porn stars of all genders and sexes; they get aroused by knowing they’re being watched.

Because they like having sex, and if in heterosexual porn, being around women.

Some (though, how many is hard to know) actually go into it hoping to make a difference, to change something within the industry, or to offer an alternative.

If they’re doing fetish work, they might want to help grow the amount of material there is out there for people with x fetish.

If they’re suitable for porn, I don’t imagine getting laid would be all that difficult. I also wager a private bedroom makes for more enjoyable sex than a camera crew and a producer who tells you what to do.

As professions go, though, I reckon there are worse ways to make a living than getting paid to shag.

I imagine and I wager and I reckon. Yeah, I’m speculating. I don’t know any porn stars.

@Fyrius: a consequence of Rule 34 is that just about anyone is suitable for porn.

In general, people do jobs because they need to earn some money in combination with a sense of enjoying the work. The balance between those goods will be different for each person. I think that people might enjoy the work for a lot of different reasons. They might enjoy having a lot of sex. They might enjoy showing off. They might enjoy the notoriety they find in the work. Some may even enjoy the technical or artistic skill in displaying sex acts for others.

We all know what money does, so I don’t think I need to explain how that might motivate people to do the work.

In addition, in porn, there may be deeper psychological motivations. Supposedly a number of women in porn have been abused. Perhaps men, too, have been sexually abused, and so they might see porn as a way of proving their manliness. Even if they haven’t been abused, they might see porn as a way of expressing power or feeling attractive or of generating some self-esteem—perhaps for the size of their dicks, or for their physiques.

I’d say that in general, the reasons why men work in porn have a lot of commonalities with the reasons why women work in porn. There will be some variation, especially that based on different social trends that affect male and female psychology differently. Certainly male vanity plays a role, just as female vanity also plays a role. Overall, though, I’d have to say there are more similarities in the motivation of men and women in porn than there are differences.

@wundayatta The amount of people in porn who have been abused is about the same number as the amount of people who’ve been abused.
