Please can anyone recommend a good, cheap, silent laptop cooler?

Asked by bongo (4302points) July 2nd, 2012

Preferably available in the UK so that I do not have to import it from elsewhere.
My laptop has been running pretty warm recently. I have really been making it work hard and think that a decent laptop cooler will help to reduce the strain on my fan which is sometimes running so so loud!

Mine is noisy. They just are, I think. Have you vacuumed the backside lately? A good blowing out of the dust can help things. I vacuum and use a noise fan pad and then I put on a good set of earphones so i don’t have to listen to it.

Also, cutting down on some of the spyware detectors that get downloaded can help. Hubby showed me that if I look at which applications are open, (sometimes things down close down properly) you can close things that are using up huge chunks of processing power, making it heat up excessively. The recent version of Second Life was doing that and it was annoying because it takes up massive amounts of processing.

Yes I hoovered it yesterday! I have been running photoshop, canon digital photo professional, imageJ, arcGIS, excel, chrome and spotify at once to sort out my data for my project as I have to switch between all of them to collaborate all of my data into one excel file! I feel that giving my laptop a little extra airflow will give the fan a break from working overtime all day everyday. Plus the lab I am working in is fairly warm too which doesnt help.
Also my laptop is less than a year old so should not really be this hot!

Mine is quite quiet, but I have zero idea if they sell them in the UK or not.
This cooler literally saved me from having to replace my laptop. It kept overheating and shutting off. It no longer does that at all.

The best coolers have two large but quiet fans. I’ve tried numerous totally quiet alternatives and I have been disappointed with the results. I can no longer find any label on the one I use, so I can not easily identify it.

I’m in the market for one, myself.. just have to say that, having comparison-shopped, ‘cheap’ and ‘silent’ don’t go together. Though, of course, ‘cheap’ is subjective. You’re looking at spending $30 or so, probably.

Running a fan off my laptop seems a silly waste of battery power to me, and it INCREASES heat output. Plus they’re ugly.

I use a cookie sheet. It was $3.99 US. Like the Ikea DRÖMMAR.

A big piece of aluminum is a perfect heat sink. If one isn’t enough use two. Or find one of the fancy two-layer ones with an airspace inside. Or bolt two together with some kind of spacer.

@MissAnthrope yes I am willing to spend $30 (about £20 – £25 here in the UK)

I went through several laptop coolers. Got tired of paying more more money for things I had to keep replacing. Went to a thrift shop and bought an open mesh wire stand for about $2 Canadian. I think it was a table for dolls or something. Put the laptop on the stand/table. The laptop’s been running happily like that for about two years.
