What company do you nominate for the Truth in Advertising Gold Medal?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) July 2nd, 2012

My personal favorite is Capital One for accurately reflecting their rape-and-pilage corporate behavior in the choice of the savage barbarian Viking Horde as their corporate spokespersons. In case you haven’t seen them, here’s a current ad. Capital One’s candor has even amazed TV advertising critics. And if you’ve ever done business with the company, you know they really do want to know, “What’s in your wallet?”.

What companies have surprised you with their candor in choice of advertising symbols and/or messages? Wouldn’t it be fun if the customers of a company got to choose the spokesmodel/s and advertising message with an eye to honestly reflecting how the corporation treats consumers?

@bkcunningham Ha! That’s GREAT. It puts the brutal right square in the middle of brutal honesty. I like that guy.

I like the Bob’s Discount Furniture adds which go something like this…

“Is the Tempur-Pedic more comfortable than my Bob-O-Pedic? I doubt it.”

It’s just so…I don’t know. Honest. Here’s a creepy guy selling you his off-brand mattress, and the best he can come up with is that he “doubts” that the name brand is more comfortable. He hasn’t even bothered to try it out.

Direct TV

I don’t want a grandson with a dog collar. Do you?

Geico, of course. I always knew it in my head that there is a talking lizard out there with a British accent. And I was right!

All companies are liars and thieves, but there is not much we can do about it so you gotta deal with it….

Well, AXE is very candid about how only cave men wear it…

VW.
I always knew that their cars are bomb proof.

They are also very honest about their global intentions

Well lets see…nix all insurance companies, all car advertising, all beauty product adverts, hmmm…I’d have to say that the most recent experience I have had with upfront and non-misleading professional services would be the very cool emergency room veterinarian that treated my cat for a Rattlesnake bite Saturday night. A straight shooter that advised me to forget about spending $1,800–2k on overnight hospitalization and anti-vemon treatment at $850 a pop and just take him home for supportive care.

Coming up on 48 hours and he is doing well….sooo, by not guilt tripping me and trying to sell me treatment that may or may not have worked and caused further complications my poor kitty has only cost me $550 instead of 2k.

What could be more truthful than the recent BP ads telling us all how wonderful things are in the gulf states affected by the massive and negligent oil spill?

Now that the damage is below the surface and out of the news, how could we not believe they have fully repaired the harm they caused?

Of course, I tend to be somewhat skeptical!

Any and all ads for alcohol.

I’ll have you all know that, because I drink, I am cool, incredibly sexy, and accepted by my peers.

@tom_g Agreed. I’ve thought the same many times watching Bob pitch that mattress.

@jonsblond Gotta agree that series are among the most infuriating, disingenuous of any commercial I’ve ever seen. If Direct TV’s aim is to convince me their management team are dumber than a bag of hammers, they are succeeding splendidly.

@mazingerz88 How true. Aside from Gecko and Gieco sounding a bit alike, what does a talking lizard even know about car insurance. Are they trying to convince us the people behind Gieco are all lizard people with Cockney accents. Come to think of it, they may be just that.

@Mr_Paradox I’ve dealt with a few small businesses that were as honest as the day is long. Hummm. Wonder if that’s what keeps them small.

@bookish1 This is all the reason I nead to forever stay away from AXE. Excellent nomination.

@ragingloli VW is definitely busted. Would that they could build cars that would do that to suicide bombers.

@Coloma Reinforcing my theory that the honest businesses stay small. Maybe ad mavens know exactly how stupid and gullible most of us are. The bigger the lie, the bigger the business pushing it.

@Dr_Lawrence Those ads really get me steamed, because I know why they are promoting such a falsehood and the harm they will do if they can sell their lie.

@Blondesjon I’ll drink to that.
