How do thunderstorms make you feel?

Asked by WillWorkForChocolate (23163points) July 9th, 2012

Do you like them? Hate them?

Do they excite you, calm you, worry you?

We’ve got a lovely thunderstorm going at the moment, and it’s fabulous!

Scary yet exhilarating.

I feel excitement and awe, but oddly soothed at the same time. We just had a huge one last night; it woke my whole family up, but I, who hadn’t been able to fall asleep yet, felt myself happily drifting off to sleep to the sound of heavy rain and booming thunder. :)

mangeons's avatar

I’m not a fan. I was woken up by huge claps of thunder at 2:30 this morning (after only having gone to sleep at 12:30!) and wasn’t able to get back to sleep. Not only was I deprived of sleep, thunderstorms kind of scare me sometimes, so that wasn’t fun either!

I love them! I’ll leave the blinds up at night so I can watch the lightening, and I love being snuggled in bed, listening to the rumble of thunder and the patter of the rain.

I love thunder storms!
The first crack of lightening,
the rumbling sound of thunder,
the first drops of rain on the roof,
the smell of ozone,
the lightening flashes again and the answering thunder sounds closer to the flash,
rain thickens, hitting the window panes with a staccato tapping,
more lightening,
booming thunder right overhead,
innundation,
steady rain,
lightening and thunder moving on,
the rain lets up,
the steady drip of water from the window cases,
the sun comes out,
echos of thunder in the distance,
the sky is washed, colors are brighter.
quiet joy.

Excited. We NEVER get them here.

It always makes me realize how much damn water is in our atmosphere, lol.

I am neutral leaning towards nervous. They don’t scare me as long as I am not on the phone, not outside, not in the shower, not watching a big huge TV. When it has been dry for days, I am happy for the rain. The kick up of winds that usually comes before, where I live now, and then the thunder in the distance as it approaches is exciting in that the much needed rain is coming.

When I lived in FL during the late summer, storms happened almost every day. The winds rarely came, it was usually a straight rain and a lot of lightening. We knew storms would hit around 2:00. So we did not plan much at those times so we weren’t out in it.

Energized and excited! I loves me a good electric storm!

Depends on the level of negative ions. Sometimes exhilarated, sometimes mellow. The crack of a good loud thunder is good for a nice rush.

I love them. Interesting turnaround for me because when I was young I was scared off them. But now I appreciate their beauty. I like to turn off all my interior lights and just stare out the window and watch. Very Zen!

Love ‘em! Exciting, yes, exhilarating!
‘Last summer this wild T-storm backed up over the mountains here and it was crazy! My patio umbrella was trying to launch off my deck and I was standing in like 40mph wind with torrential rain holding onto it for dear life anchoring it to the table. lol
It felt like being a captain at sea on some old time ship hanging onto the mast. haha

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Not bad! They bring out the Frankenstein monster feeling in me!

I’m with @syz

What was also amazing was while I was in college, during the winter, we would get snow thunderstorms. Talk about the coolest thing ever!

jerv's avatar

I love them, and it’s one of the only reasons I regret moving from New England to Seattle.

@Ponderer983 Thundersnow rawks! Sadly, Seattle rarely gets more than a few inches of snow and I’ve only heard thunder an average of once a year.

Ponderer983's avatar

@jerv it was the trippiest thing I had ever seen. The first time it happened, I was in shock. I didn’t know it was possible. I thought it was the end of days lol. But after that, totally awesome when the bright light reflects off all the snow. It lit up the night like it was daytime.

bookish1's avatar

I love thunderstorms. They make me feel sleepy and cozy. Sometimes horny too, haha.
Where I grew up in So FL, there was rain and generally a thunderstorm almost every afternoon during the summer. It was a good time for a nap :)

@Ponderer983 : That sounds AMAZING. I have never heard of such a thing! That sounds like the background to a final boss battle or something, haha. With some intense organ music.

A friend told me some time back that thunderstorms were the heaven and earth making love—so every time I see a thunderstorm, I think of it that way and smile at the intense exchange of passion.

stardust's avatar

I really like thunderstorms! I like it when the earth makes it’s voice heard

Sometimes they’re enjoyable and other times they really do scare the hell out of me. My daughter once asked me if we could go outside and play in one.YEAH RIGHT!

Although going outside during a thunderstorm obviously isn’t dangerous, I would try and convince her otherwise. I couldn’t risk her finding out what a really, really loud thunderclap can still do to a grown man like me.

mambo's avatar

They make me sleepy. I love falling asleep to the loud rumbles of thunder and the pounding of rain on the rooftop.

augustlan's avatar

I’m usually fairly neutral, but a little scared. After that last big one left me without power for four days during the hottest week ever, I view them all with hostile suspicion. :/

ucme's avatar

They fwighten me oh so terribly much that my penis retracts into my groin & hibernates there until the nasty storm passes.
I’m a fucking wimp & I know it!

Bellatrix's avatar

I haven’t read the previous answers because I didn’t want them to influence me. I LOVE thunderstorms. They make me feel excited. I love watching the lightning and hearing the thunder cracking and rolling. My only regret about the house we live in now is we aren’t up high enough to see the storms rolling in.

picante's avatar

I am very much in awe of a great thunderstorm. The promise of rain is fantastic—the light show, the rolling thunder—just magnificent. We were the epicenter of a doozie last night—maybe four inches total for the evening, and a small tree was taken down by the wind. But I sat inside while the lightning was close, and them moved out to the deck when things settled down a little bit, and watched every minute of the performance. Encore!

Keep_on_running's avatar

They are very exciting and ironically make me feel less depressed. The flashing light, dark, shapely clouds and deafening rain is comforting.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I think they’re fun. I wouldn’t say they make me feel anything in particular other than ‘This is so coooooooooool”

bkcunningham's avatar

I had to look up where in the US there are very, very few thunderstorms. I live in Florida and see some pretty magnificent lightening strikes. And the thunder rolls.

Ponderer983's avatar

@bookish1 This is what it looks like. It gets so bright when it happens!

Berserker's avatar

I love thunderstorms. They have this sense of comfort they give me that I really enjoy. I love sitting on my balcony and checking them out, or from out the window if they’re too violent and wet for me to be out. When I was a kid I loved it when the power went out and it was all dark everywhere for a while. Kinda pisses me off now, but the sense of appreciation will not be denied. Got a cool power outage last year, for like two hours. I sat with the neighbors upstairs, drinking beer by candlelight and talking about what the fuck did people do when they didn’t have electricity. XD It’s a memorable moment because no I didn’t get laid.

Thunderstorms sound great, they look great, and I guess I wouldn’t say any of that if a lightning bolt hit my place and asploded my computer, PlayStation and kitchen sink haha.
But yes, they make me feel all hyper, excited, giddy and cozy. The ones here are way too short though, one might last half an hour if it’s lucky.

mambo's avatar

I just experienced one of the scariest thunderstorms of my life. My power went out for quite a few hours and I was all alone!

Bellatrix's avatar

Aww, sending you a big hug across the ether @mambo.

Mariah's avatar

I love ‘em. Distant thunder is calming, close thunder is awe-inspiring.

snapdragon24's avatar

Makes me think of the movie ‘craft’ with the four witches.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Ooooh, The Craft! Good movie.

snapdragon24's avatar

I know right!

Berserker's avatar

The Craft, is that the movie where that girl ends up losing all her hair? Man that still freaks me out to no end.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Symbeline Yeah, it’s the one with “Crazy Nancy”, and the group put a curse on the school snob who starts losing clumps of hair because their “karma spell” whooped her snooty ass. Creepy, but I love it! It kinda made me wish I could do that to some of the nasty bitches I went to school with, LOL.
