In your experience, in office politics, is it really true that the truth will out?

Asked by Earthgirl (11214points) July 11th, 2012

In a case where it was your word against someone else’s, what happened? Should you try to defend yourself against misperceptions or does it do more harm than good? When the truth comes out is it already too late? Do you have any advice on how to defend your reputation without seeming to be defensive?

No, it is not only not true, but the truth is often actively stifled, and people who insist on speaking the truth are not long fot the company.

There is a lot to be said for maintaining your dignity – how you deal with a tricky situation like this will earn more respect in the long run than the matter itself. And yes, eventually the truth usually comes out because, er, it’s the truth and so the only part of the story that’s real. Holes will appear in other people’s versions if they’re not true. The truth will always remain the same.

Time wounds all heels, but it often takes so long in the office environment that the damage is done and set in stone by the time the truth comes out. If you can defend yourself without coming across as the bad seed do it.

I’ve never been in that situation but I would tell the truth and leave it at that. If someone else is lying that is their problem. You don’t have to be defensive if you tell the truth.

Eventually, the middle managers realized my ex boss had raped a coworker, taken pictures of it, and shown them to the crew, then threatened to kill anyone who ratted him out.
However, it was years before the MMs woke up.

@filmfann That cocksucker wouldn’t have to figure out how to kill me. I’d off his ass for that. I don’t know how right now, but you do that around me your ass is done. Mess with women, kids or animals and you don’t want to be around me.
