When I download a font, where should I save it on my computer?

Every time I download a beautiful new font, it ends up sitting on my desktop, because I don’t know how to do it properly. As a result, I’ve got many fonts on my computer that I can’t actually use, since I don’t know how to get them into Open Office, either. What am I doing wrong? Can you give me step-by-step instructions? Thanks!
