What can one do with a Raspberry Pi?

Asked by PhiNotPi (12681points) July 22nd, 2012

The Raspberry Pi is a very compact and minimalistic computer that costs around $25—$35 and is about the size of a credit card. It runs a version of Debian Linux and has support for Python.

I am thinking about buying one (it is a charity), and I am wondering what exactly I should do with it. It seems to be the perfect platform for some sort of programming/building project, given it’s small size. Do you have any ideas for projects that I could do with a Raspberry Pi?

Hmm… that’s strange, I wonder what I did wrong. But anyway, your link is working correctly.

I think you need to have a http:// at the beginning of the link

Anyway, you could use it as a portable web server to demonstrate website projects that require php/sql/etc server functionality to clients.

I can think of a few uses.

Personally, I have considered making a NAS for my home network. A Pi is more than capable of being a storage server for a small network like mine.

I thought the autonomous boat FishPi was a great use.

I’m not sure if it’s still the case, but they’ve had trouble keeping them stocked, they tend to sell out immediately when a new run is made.
